i am looking at 308s

ok i have been looking for 308s i can take to the range and get some nice groupes so what you guy think i should get rem 700, savage,m1a, ar-10, 20", 24", 26" fluting no fluting let me know

  rem 700 fluted (either the PSS or the VSSF if you can find one for a decent price. Not that flutes will make much if any difference for most apllications, but they are KEWL[8D]

  Remington 700 with , Ruger , Savage , or CZ 550, all with a heavy fluted barrel. All good rifles with the potential to shoot itty bitty groups if the load is right.

  You seem split over bolt vs semi rifles. If semi I'd add HK to the list as their sniper rifles are world class. Next I'd want to know what you think are good groups. Hunters tend to think that 1.5" is good. Target shooters 1", match shooter less then that and varmint shooters even less. Your personal wants here will shape what class of rifle you are willing to the shell out the $$ for. More accuracy often equals more money. Don't forget to budget similar amounts of money on it's optics. Also are you talking out of the box or are you intending to get this rifle worked on? If out of the box, then Rem 700 and Savage seem to be on top at the moment, with Weatherby nipping at their heels. Fluting only seems to be an asset if on a really bull barrel. Such barrels take longer to heat up, but also as long to cool off. Fluting can aid in cooling and also stiffens the barrel, both are good. Fluting lighter contour barrels are up to you, but personally I think it is a waste.

  I have a T/C Encore that shoots handloads pretty good,haven't tried factory fodder yet,just a thought.

  I think the CZ550s and Howas are some of the most accurate rifles out there...they're the best deals for the money right now.

  I would go with the Remington 700 VLS. Float the barrel, and have the tigger adjusted to about 2.5 pounds, and if that rifle won't shoot .75" groups with store bought ammo, I'll eat your hat. Unless there is something amiss, .308's are inheritantly accurate with about any kind of ammo you can throw at them. I have a Winchester 88 in .308 that has had nothing done to it, and with handloads, it will group right at an inch at 100 yards. That's not a custom handload, it's just something I threw together, using H4895 powder and Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets. I think the 700 VLS would serve you extremely well.

  I think the most accurate out of the box is the Savage 10 (FV, FP, not 110) or BSS with the accu-trigger. The stainless with the laminated stock is the only one that looks good but they all shoot extremely well. I will go as far as saying better than anything off the shelf. A lot of other good looking rifles that shoot well too. Win. , Rem, Howa, Custom 98 Mauser, CZ, Tikka, I did another post on what a guy thought would be the best all around rifle. I like the CRPF and safety style of the Win 70 for use in the field. I chose 30-06 over .308 because it has a little more oomph with heavier bullets. The separation shows at about 165 gr. bullets and up. -Good luck with your choice

  I have a Howa (old one when they were called Smith & Wesson long guns) and a Weatherby Predator.
  
  For the money the Howa is a heck of a rifle.

  Savage 10FP with Choate or Mcmillan stock. Will out shoot most 308s out of the box. Email me if you want more info. I got one that I shoot out to 1K with and it is a tack driver out of the box. No Mods.

  I have a Weatherby Vangard (Howa 1500) that shoots really well right out of the box. Worth looking into imho, I'm now thinking of a Howa 1500 in a .223.
