Value of custom Rem. 700 Bench Rest/Sporter?

To all who really know,

I have a really nice looking and shooting bench rest sporter that I acquired through a trade in 1986. It was barreled by Nelson Berger ( brother of Walt Berger, Berger Bullets) in July of 83, with a 22" stainless Hart chambered in 243 Win. It has a beautiful, highly figured walnut stock, Tasco 24x44 target scope and light crisp trigger.

    with a wood stock and tasco glass (assuming it is not high grade bastogne walnut) you are looking at maybe $600-$700 if the round count is low.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Thanks for the info. I put the Tasco on it, did'nt have a scope mounted when I acquired the rifle. Being in my 20s at the time, Icouldn't afford the good stuff.

    dk,...what ype of stock is it? is it a wide foreend with a completely FLAT bottom to it? is it laminated and not regular wood? What do you know about it's being built? if the action was "trued" that makes a difference. What twist rate is the barrel? is it stainless? what manuf of barrel? what length? what dia at the muzzle? Is the trigger factory or aftermarket? What type of scope bases?

    all these can greatly affect it's worth. I can lend a much better idea if you know or can get the questions answered by someone who would know. Try giving Walte a call, chances are with a good pic, he may remember. Lots of gunsmiths stick to one of several barrel makers and twist rates, so he may be able to recall much of the details.

    JustC, Refer to my original post. That will answer most of your questions. The stock is highly figured walnut with a wide flat forend. Tried to post a picture for you, but failed. I'll try to send one to your e-mail address .

    a sideways pic if possible could help as well. If the trigger is silver and not black,..there is a good possibility it is an aftermarket. 22" is a good length for a rigid barrel, assuming it should end up somewhere near .9xx" at the muzzle up to 1.250".

    The flat bottom makes it ride the bags much better in the rest, so that is a positve as well.

    JustC, I spoke with Nelson Berger. The barrel is definetly a Hart and measures 0.690" at the muzzle. The trigger is black. The trigger guard is silver; my doing.

    well dk, you have a great barrel there my friend. I have a 21" Hart on a rem700 in 308 and it is superbly accurate. .690" should provide you plenty of rigidity for some nice tight groups. The trigger sounds like factory, but if it was adjsuted right, it will perform beyond reproach as it is one of the best factory triggers ever invented. One of my most accurate customs still wears it's factory triggers (don't tell anyone[;)])

    Was he able to give you an idea of twist rate? do you plan on keeping the rifle and shooting it? if so, enjoy it, it will serve you well. A good load in that rifle will make you proud. Throw some good glass on it, and have at it!!

    JustC, I'll check on the twist rate, that's a good thing to know. I'll most likely to put the gun up for auction. I mostly fish and hunt now. When I hunt I use my TC super 14 in 30 Herrett. I played around with the bench rest game a little in the early 90's. Got the 243 down to a rock solid 5 shot 1/2 m.o.a. . Too many gnat hairs to split in bench rest; and, I like to eat good fresh meat! Never could find a palatable recipie for paper with holes in it.
