m44 worth it

Are the polish romanian etc. rifles 7.62+54 for 60 - 80 bucks on gb worth the money.Would it be better to go with an 8mm mauser for a little more money

    In my opinion, the M44 is the best buy right now. There is nothing wrong with them. Ammo is cheap and plentiful too.

    I got mine(polish) for $50 on sale at dunmham's sporting goods. It was a neat gun, though with a steel butt plate it kicked a little hard. It also had a fairly nice stock/exterior too. The only reason why I sold it was because the barrel was fouled out making it horrible inaccurate. Moral of the story, be weary because you get what you pay for.[;)][B)]

    I supose it depends on what you want it for. If you are collecting post WWII era military rifles on the cheap, then they are great. I would hold out for either a never issued polish M44 or an arsenal refinished Russian, because barrel bore condition is everything. Many of the rifles out there have shot or rotted out barrels and are really only good for wall hangers. If you want it as a hunting rifle and are willing to limit yourself to only iron sights then they are ok for the money as they are very rugged and depenable. If you want to sporterize or put optics on them I would recomend that you go for any Mauser 98 over the best grade M44. With the Mauser the sky is the limit. If the barrel is good and you aren't a collector then you can chop the barrel, drill and tap for scope mounts and sporterize the stock to your hearts content. The 8x57 cartridge loaded hot will take any North American game short of the big bears, with the right slug and range. Still if you can find a good one,the M44 is no slouch with it's 7.62x54R ammo, which is somewhat the equivalent of the .308win. Any way you decide to go you should have plenty of fun so it really is a no loose situation.

    The M44 is a great gun, especially for the money. It will never have the elegant looks, or smooth function of the Mauser.
    But, the M44 is a rugged and reliable gun. You can expect 4 inch groups. Lots of cheap milsurp ammo out there.
    As ern98 said, if you want to put a scope on the gun get a Mauser. If you want a cheap reliable rifle to throw behind the seat of the pickup you can't beat the M44.

    The main thing with these or any other exmilitary is to completely clean the cosmoline from them. That means taking the bolt apart, cleaning the trigger group, the barrel, ect. Not that big a deal, just time consuming and really goopy. But you also get real familiar with the rifle.

    I like mine a lot! Matter of fact, I'm curently (just at the 'kinda stage') looking
    for a M91 with the Imperial Double Headed Eagle intact - in very good (at least)
    condition (hint, hint)! I got sucked in by a God son who collects them - you'd
    be AMAZED at the collector 'Nagant subculture' out there. It's a pretty interesting
    gun!
