Minor High Standard Problem
I have an older Hamden made 107 Supermatic Trophy.
I've been shooting it recently and it is a real pleasure except for one issue:
When I load the magazine the very first bullet always gets stuck when I release the slide and I need to physically work the bullet into the chamber. After this the entire magazine will fire without any problem. This is probably a monir issue, but I a need to know how to fix it properly.
Is it just a matter of lubrication maintenance, or is it a physical adjustment?

Hello as always BEANTOWN gives great advice but it breaks my heart that it his picture at the bottom shows another brand of pistol The part about letting the slide "snap" forward is very important. THE 2 front fingers of the feeing part of the Magazine some times need to be formed in to get better feeding but this shoud be done by someone who has done it before.Does the problem show up with more then one Magazine? its the feed angle issue. its the mag ears or the springs. goal..to get that bullet perfectly straight as it feeds.
the back of the bullet is suppose to pop up JUST as the bullets tip reaches the chamber. this is allowed by (as perry mentioned,)those to little wings (wingy) things on top of the mag. the ones to the rear guide and straighten, the ones in front release. take a plier and tweak the ears (thingys) on the leading tip closest to the chamber. this will hold the bullet just enough to give the rear of the bullet time to get up level and the bullet should let go of the mag JUST as the slide begins to push it into baterry. there has to be slight resistance on the bullet as it cycles in but it must release just as it begins to feed or the mag will let it go too soon and the bullet will fly out of the gun all together. make it too tight and the bullet will stick in the mag (causing your problem to be even worse.)
remember, the striping action is what gets the bullet from the mag to the chamber. if you just release the slide without pulling it back, you dont get a good powerful feed. take another mag and try it and see if the gun works fine. if it does, it was the mag. the reason only the first bullet doesnt work is because the speed in which cycling normally take place is so fast, the energy overpowers the minor flaw and all works fine.
check in this order:
chamber and mag insides.......clean -easy (shoot gun scrubber in the mag, clean off residue like a dentist would teeth.)
mag ears............adjust -easy
mag spring..........change(up presssure to align)-not so easy
slide spring........change(level feed pressure to strip fast)-not easy at all to a novice w/o tools.
wolffe spring kits are worth their weight in gold. get a couple and always have one around.

Excellent advice as usual.
The pistol came with two mags, but I have only used one so far. Will try the other one next time out. I have just been releasing the slide with the slide stop button. I will start pulling the slide back for the initial release.
If I still have the problem, I'll take all Bobski's instructions with the pistol to my local gunsmith to make sure it's done right. He's pretty good about letting me watch and learn as he works on things.

Hey, my picture shows the three best things that come out of Massachusetts right now!
