Springfield Armory Rangefinding 4-14x56
i would like to know how good these scopes are. it is the older model without the turn knob on the side. but to buy a 308 with one on it and was checking it out before i did. i am going to buy the gun anyways, but just wanted to know if the scope is good.

There's no way to be sure.
Springfield, Inc bought them from different manufacturers in Japan, & quality was variable. Generally, it was not good. There is no way to tell a not-so-bad scope from one that is just plain bad, except to try it & find out. The company will probably repair it without charge, but some of us don't need that headache.
Mounts also vary in quality, with 1st gen being poorest. On the other hand, if it has an ARMS or Brookfield mount, that could be worth more than the scope.

They were made by Hakko in Japan. There is a good discussion on them over at the M14 forum. The general consensus is they are junk... 0 -
so, i should take the tasco off the gun im selling and switch it with the springfield and keep the tasco? it is just an old mil dot 6-24x42. shoots well. i just thought the springfields were good scopes, i guess a $500 isnt always what it is cracked up to be. where do you even get the springfields at? by the way, it is on a 308 remington BDL varmint special. the older model one i have shoots 1/2 in groups with 180gr round nose with the 6-24 tasco. the one i am buying has the springfield on it, it is the same gun, just a newer model.

If it's the Super Sniper made by Tasco & sold by SWFA, you bet. Otherwise, I can't say.

The reticle is very interesting as well as the illumination they offer,..but that is where it ends. The track record is faulty at best. It is a shame, because they look to be a great long range scope. Hakko has (in the past) made some great glass, but if the internals are crap, then you are left with a nice clear peice of crap. I would sell the rife you have with the simmons, AND sell the springfield scope. Go to at least a leupold MK IV LR M1 and you will never be happier,unless you throw the extra at it to go nightforce NXS.
sell it all and don't look back. MHO
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

the problem with the older models was the eye piece being held with three small screws if the screws are tightened properly you could have fair accuracy. If you look thru the scope and grap the eyepiece and move it up and down you will see the cross hairs move also. not a good thing. mainly because the scope could get bumped in transit and knock the accuracy out of wack, you wouldn't know till you took the shot. 0 -
I have one and have mixed reviews on different days. I've shot 1.5" @ 300 somedays and barely made 2" @ 100 some days. I honestly think that problem is with me and some inability to adjust for parallax. When I check it 3-4 times and come up with the same thing I'm doing allright and get good groups. When I don't I pay the price.
It really depends on the total package too of what you are buying. The SA scope isn't bench accurate nor will it tune to the long range drop compensation reticle because conditions vary all the time. It stays pretty close though. But, for rangefinding it works pretty good and provided you adjust for parallax/range it does good, not super. I have found the glass to be pretty clear and distortion free. The 56mm bell gathers light well. It will take a $500 Burris or Leupold to beat one. But, they can, it all depends on the total package you are getting.
