what is a slab side

i know that i am full of questions, but here comes another one

what is a slab side, refering to 1911s. i hear it all the time and forthe life of me i have no clue what it is talking about

  When the US military changed over to the .45 auto from the .45 revolver,the slang term slabside was used.The difference being the revolver's rounded cylinder as opposed to the flat side of the auto.When I carried one in the military,slabside was a term of endearment!You knew that Old Slabside would do the job in a tight spot.

  A slab side is the Colt Government Model 1911.
  
  Just as Tommy states the rather large, flat sides of the slide gave rise to the term "slab side". Other pistols of similar design can be called the same as Bobski states.

  Bill Jordan, in his book, No Secondplace Winner, called the 1911 a "slab-sided varmint." I think the 1923 modification was to index the right side of the frame behind the trigger and put the bump on the bottom of frame.
