Can a TC receiver be a rifle receiver ?
I have a TC Contender with a 14 inch barrel and scope. I want to sell it, but seeing as I have no FFL I believe it will cost me $40.00 to ship a handgun as required by UPS or FEDEX.
Can I get by selling the receiver by itself as a TC rifle receiver, then mailing it through USPS ?...or is there a difference between TC Contender rifle and handgun receivers ?

I'm sure this may cause some differences of opinion [;)]
Let's handle the technical question first ... "Is there a difference between a TC pistol and rifle receiver?" Well first off it is the frame, beyond terminology ... no there is not one bit of mechanical difference ... it's all in how you assemble the component pieces.
If you've just sold the frame and that is all your shipping, IMHO, that's no different then sending a rifle receiver/action, sans barrel, stock, etc.
However if your also shipping a barrel that is less than 16 inches, pistol grip, etc. then you are shipping a pistol that is disassembled and therefore what you have there is a handgun.
Now you say you want to sell a Contender setup as a pistol (14 inch barrel, scope, etc.) well then if you put all the parts in the box together or disassembled it is a handgun.
I'll let those that follow make other possible suggestions, etc. Yet in closing I want to be sure that you are clear on one thing, and that thing is that you do not need to be an FFL to ship a handgun (or rifle or shotgun), but you darn well better be sending the gun (handgun or long gun) to one, and you had best have a xerox of the FFL's license ... and you just may want to use the BATFE EZCheck system to validate that FFL. Make sure when you sell your Contender that you state you are making a PRIVATE SALE and the buyer must be an FFL or have an FFL that will accept a shipment from a private individual. If you don't do these things you can have a wide range of problems.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I agree with what CM said. Also if I understand correctly once a pistol ALWAYS a pistol. What I meen is if when you bought it, it was transfered as a pistol that is what it will be. As a pistol you can make it into a rifle with no leagl troubles but the reciver is STILL a pistol. If the reciver was transfered as a rifle that is all it will ever be. Here is the catch, as a rifle you can NOT legaly put a pistol grip on it and less then a 16" bbl (making it a pistol). Also you can not put less then a 16" bbl on either one if there is a stock on it since that would make it a AOW (any other weapon) which is really illegal unless properly registerd.
Ok long story short, if you bought it as a pistol, that is what it is.

it does not matter what it was sold as , you can put a stock and a 16" or longer barrel on the receiver and its a rifle , take the stock off put on a shorter barrel and its a pistol
if you ship it with a short barrel and pistol grip its a pistol ,
ship it with a stock and long barrel and its a rifle
ship just the receiver and its just a receiver
If I'm reading your quetion right , you want to sell the receiver by itself so you can ship it cheaper , break it down so its just the receiver with the pin , no barrel, no grip , no forearm , then its only a receiver ,
T/C receivers are not marked or serial numbered in any special way to make them a pistol or a rifle , they are just a receiver until you put the other parts on them ,0 -
just a note about the t/c contender; this is THE only pistol/rifle receiver you can do this with. T/c got in a piss'n match with the ATF about this and took it all the way to the Supream court and won. 0 -

They got beat at their own game, but it took lots of cash to get it through the court system.
