I'm getting really confused about calibers
Would someone be so kind as to totally breakdown all the popular ones for handguns? Please include:recoil, ft lbs, fps, cost, availability, does ft lbs=stopping power?, lengths(I understand .38spl will go in .357), +p, differences between say .38/.38spl(.44/.44mag=longer/more powder, right?), etc. I'd really appreciate any help sorting or even some good links. P.S, I have never/will never reload(for various reasons), so cost will be affected by that, of course.

I think you need to purchase a couple of reloading manuals, they have a wealth of information. the "Cartridges of the World" book has lots of goodies on ammo.
But the basics are as follows;
Recoil; it goes up as power and bullet weight goes up and also as gun weight drops. Each person sees recoil differently, to some the ,.357mag is tops to others it is not even noticable.
Muzzle Velocity; it is the function of chamber pressure it is the difference between the .38 to .357mag. and .44spl to 44 mag. There is no other difference. It is the same exact bullet going faster. Faster bullets equals more power, mass times the square of the velocity equals power.
Stopping power is the subject of discussion that will go on forever. A central nervous system hit with a .22 short will stop anyone, almost instantly. Compare that to a "boiler room" hit with a 44 mag and the difference is huge.0 -
What your asking for could easily become like writing a novel, the best thing I could say is to go out and buy a magazine that has a 2005 catalog in it, guns and ammo version usually has a complete ballistics table for both pistol and rifle ,even some older ones are good 0 -
I like these websites. There is a wealth of data there and you can learn much from the information included on these sites. I would suggest that if there are any terms in the text you don't understand, do a search for the word or phrase on Google and the information will probably appear.

Seriously, you're better off buying a book about cartridge data than trying to gather all the information here. Nothing bad about the posters it's just that there's enough information to write 10 novels and just as many if not more opinions on the subject.

Yeah, I knew it would be a lot! Let's try a more direct and more narrow route: Excludeing mag, spl, +p, reloads, etc., just rank the popular calibers by smallest grain projectile available. As a little side note;
The .357 mag with 125 gr HP ammo is a man stopper for sure. Numerous shooting reports confirm this. recoil is not an issue to most folks. Muzzle blast and noise sure is.
The .45ACP is a known man stopper; it is a balance of bullet diameter and MV. the combination is "corect," it works. Ammo is not expensive
Same for the .45 COLT; but the ammo is a bit higher in cost
.44 Mag has too much penteration to be considered, ammo is spendy.
.41 Mag is very good choice; ammo is getting hard to find
9MM carries lots of rounds (most guns), probably because you will need them. There are many mixed reports of success and failure with a 9MM. ammo is cheap.0 -

Bean, sure many of us could supply you with this info. It has taken us many years of learning to aquire it. To try to put it into jr level wording that someone of limited understanding might value would be prohibitive and nonproductive. Your questions are akin to asking for us to supply a complete summery of an engineering degree. Get real, the suggestion that you might pick up a good reloading manual is a good one. Another good source would be a copy of "Cartridges of the World" by Frank C. Barnes. 0 -

Any of the manufacturers' ammunition charts contain almost all of what you ask, and are free from many sporting goods stores.
