rifle rest...range
im going to be doint ALOT of shooting of higher caliber rifles, im sighting in (3) .300mag's and (1) .308. can anybody recommend a good 'rest' to use, so A. my arm doesnt fall off B. dont get any bad habits about jerking, cause im anticipating the recoil. looking to spend around $100-150. thanks in advance for the help.

Midway www.midwayusa.com has the Caldwell Lead Sled rifle rest on sale now. If I intended shooting, (3) 300 Win. Mags. from the bench at one sitting, thats what I would use.

If I have to shoot a whole lot, I shoot heavy calibers from a rest with a 25 Lb bag of #8 lead shot over my shoulder. It's really cheap and it works well. The bag doesn't have to be completely full, but it helps. Other than that, two or three layers of the gell recoil shoulder pads would work ok.

if recoil reduction is the goal, then no rest will help with that. A good shoulder pad will help. Now as far as a front rest for accuracy work, then look at the Sinclair and the Bald Eagle rests, they are the best IMO.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Hate to tell you what I use. But its a couple of bags of Kitty Litter
for about $2.00 ea, for bench resting.0 -
For a whole lot less money than has been suggested so far, consider changing your bench technique.
Sit up straight (even if it means building up the rest height) or kneel next to the bench with the rifle bagged on top of the bench. Keep your back relaxed, so that you will move with the recoil.
With your off hand, push slightly forward (this locks your off arm so that it absorbs 1/3 of the total reoil, and reduces the muzzle jump).
BTW, the 300Win isn't that hard a kicker, at least compaired to the 416Rigby that taught me "the technique".
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
tailgunner,..I have a new found respect. You learning on a 416rigby is wayyy more than I would put up with[;)] I will say this,..when I shoot off the bench on the rest,..I have found that sitting up just as you say to an almost "erect" position, I shoot better. learn NOT to lean into the gun.
and yes,..before the jokes start, I have been known to be "erect" when them bugholes appear[:D]
I let the front sit in the bag/platform, and let my elbows support my weight, and then ever so slightly grip the rear bag with my front hand so that a grip applied to the ears can steady the rear while the front is supported by gravity. When I say that I set up on my elbows, I mean that they are almost layed out flat on the bench with my chest against the bench lip. Also, learn to stretch your legs out so that no pressure from your legs is transfereed to the rifle. I stretch mine out so that the backs of my boots are resting on the ground with the soles off the ground. NO leg pressure what-so-ever. Another help is to almost come up to the rifle from the side of it, and not in a straight line behind it. That uses more of your shooting arm to reach down the stock toward the trigger and not oustretched at a double angle away from and then back toward the stock. That will make for horizontle dispersion. Also,..get a shorter stool or seat so that the rifle sets up high in your shoulder joint to give better cheek weld.
This works for me,..YMMV.
also, in leiu of a mechanical front rest (AKA $$$$$$), you should take a hard look at the "uncle buds bulls bag 15" model) That with a short rear bag has given me many benchrest worthy groups and for $55 it is a MUST HAVE. I can lay that bag on the hood,..and swivel back and forth to cover the whole field with only a rear bag squeeze to get my elevation.

Unless your a scrawny little person, the 300 WM should be a breeze with a
PAST shoulder type recoil pad, and following JustC's advise, except for the rear bag squeezing, as that's not very consistent to accuracy demands.
The Caldwell Lead Sled works fine with a 470 Nitro Double Rifle, so it must work with the puny little 300 Win Mag[:D]

MN, I have the "Uncle Buds Bulls Bag" and although it really does not do much for recoil, it does help with the accuracy. I have plenty of targets to prove it. It weighs around 40 lbs. filled with sand. It was around $50 I beleive. It has a butterly design that holds the gun like a vise, but does not damage the finish. As for recoil, I use a Past Magplus recoil shield at the range for shooting heavy magnums. It was around $17 at Midway and it works well. Before my wife bought me the Bulls Bag, I had made some bags out of scrap cloth and filled them with rice inside a ziplock bag. It was very effective, but did not give the results of the Bulls Bag. Another nice rest for under $100 you may want to look at is the "Outers Varminter" rifle rest. A guy had one at the range a few years ago and I liked it. I'm not sure if Outers is still making them. Worth a look though.[;)]
