1908 Colt .380 ... the question of 'The Box?'
I picked up another old Colt .380 yesterday and it's not
only 99% - or as close to 'mint' as you can get - but it
also came with the original box!
I've been wondering if anyone has ever really established
a 'value' - perhaps a percentage of the cost - that 'The
Original Box' gives to a firearm? Is there a rule of thumb
that I'm not aware of - or - is it just an esoteric thing
that cannot be quantified?
Anyone ever heard of a 'rule of thumb' for this?
Know the manufacture date? Is it around 1923?

1925 according to Proofhouse.
Is the box the pistol came in, marked in any way to establish it's a Colt product?
Could it be possible, that it was fitted to the pistol by a former owner after it left Colt?0 -
I don't ever remember seeing a box like the one in the picture. Could you post a couple pics of the box itself?

Hello IMHO it would be very hard to have a rule of thumb as some guns lend themself to have a larger % of guns with boxes and others are rare age also plays into it. I have seen a first generation Box go for $400.00 and this would not even have matching serial # but my guess a 98% series colt gov. model 45 with the factory matching serial # box might add $10.00.Most working guns the box is thrown away but delux guns most boxes are kept. 0 -

I have never seen an early Colt box
- it looks to be some kind of presentation
box with a brass engraving name plate on the
front. The dancing Colt icon is unmistakable.
The inside was form fitted for the gun.
Anyone know about the box?0 -
On Sam Lisker's site http://www.coltautos.com/ he shows pictures of Colt Model 1903's & 08's, in "Factory Presentation Cases". The cases are constructed differently then yours, and the lining is maroon colored rather then red, as the case your pistol came in. 0 -

Hello I had a colt lord and lady derringer set that came in a box very much like yours could the insert have been changed but the lineing kept? 0 -
Perry: I honestly don't know, WYSIWYG kind of deal. The guy I bought it from
didn't know anything about it, either. I paid no more for the box - it was
just included. I suppose anything is possible. Regardless, the two are going to
remain together as long as they remain in this family. I don't believe in breaking
things up if they are together - these two certainly look that way to me - unless
someone can convince me differently.0 -
That is ONE BEAUTIFUL pistol and case !!!!!
My "Colt's Dates of Manufacture" by R.L. Wilson gives the final serial numbers in 1925 as 72000 an in 1926 as 77500.
