Octagon Barrel on Cowboy Rifles

What is the significance of the ogtagonal shaped barrel on some cowboy action lever rifles? The carbines don't seem to have them. Anybody know? Thanks [?]

  My guess is that these were the first 'bull barrels' designed to combat innaccuracy from heat flexing the barrel.
