Hole in bottom of bolt??? Remington 597 LS .17HMR

I have a remington 597 LS in .17 HMR. Its an autoloader and while cleaning it I noticed that on the bottom of the bolt (if you look through the magazine well you can see it) has a small rough hole about 5mm below the front of the bolt right next to the middle guide (hole is about 1mm in diamater). I am guessing this is not sopposed to be there? Maybe this is the reason for extremely high number of stovepipes?

  Is it perhaps for in the event of case rupture it vents the gas down instead of back into your face?

  I just got off the phone with Remington. Apparently it is normal from where they tap the bolt for the extractor.

  holes in bolts are quite often there, as stated already, to release gasses in case of ruptures. And, they have to drill a hole to install roll pins etc for extractors, same as the rem700.
  
  why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

  Unfortunately the 597 is notorious for stove pipes. My .22 Mag does this all the time. I'm not sure, but I think it's a poor mag design problem. I have the original all plastic mags and the newer aluminum/plastic mags...and I have problems with both.

  Today I went and shot it with 0 failures of any kind.
  
  Apparently the bolt guide rails were too tight causing all these problems. After I loosend up the set screws it functions flawless.
  
  Strange considering I bought it new and had never messed with them until now. [^]
