.270 and 300mag, Cover All The Bases?

Thinking of hunting anything from small varmits to elk and bear. Will these two cals. cover everything in North America?

    To answer your question Yes, the .270 and .300 will cover anything on this continent. There are so many different bullets and loads available for the .30 cal you should have no problem with the "big game" and you can even hunt varmints with smaller bullets. The .270 in turn is versatile enough to cover the varmints and smaller game, although if i had to choose two guns I would go with the .243 and .300. But thats just my opinion and could be due to the fact that i have them[:)]. The .270 and the .300 are both excellent calibers and a joy to shoot.

    why would you want 2 cartridges that are so close together to form your 2 gun battery?
    Something like the 257Roberts on the light end (p-dog to deer) and the 375H&H on the high end (deer to polar bear) would seem like a much better choice.
    This realy isn't a experts question, more of a general discussion topic.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    i would go with a 25-06 and a 338. they will pretty well cover anything on the continent.

    When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

    Nothing wrong with those choices but I agree about them being in the "close performers" for big game calibers. By close, I mean that they have a lot of overlap for hunting game. If I was limited to 2 guns, they would be a 7mm-08 and a 338WM. The great thing is - you can't go wrong!

    I like your thinking. IMHO .270 Win will handle everything from deer down to prairie rat. A .300 Win Mag will handle almost everything a man could care to hunt but there is a punishment factor to this caliber. It just so happens that these are some of my favorite calibers for hunting, but when it comes to varmints, a .223 is so much more fun to shoot.

    Don't overlook the 6.5x55 Swedish. Just got one in a model 70. Very accurate. SHould work well for deer and smaller. Got a 300 win mag and a 7mm mag. If I had to have just one it would be the 300. 338 is also a good choice. Nothing it can't handle. 308, 257 Rob, 25-06, 7mm-08, There are many good caliber and rifle choices.
