Exporting Antique Firearms

Just sold a Burgess shotgun to a guy in Holland who owns an antique gun business. Says he gets many pre-98 guns into Holland via USPS AirMail. My PO says no way, then says antiques are ok, then antiques are ok only if the firing pin is removed. What's the real scoop?? Anyone out there w/ experience exporting antiques to Europe?

    Antique firearms (pre-1898) are not considered firearms by USPS; the "firing pin" business is baloney.

    The real problem is exporting a firearm. I doubt that this shotgun is on the State Dept's list of banned exports, but I would want a letter from them stating that it is OK. I mean, if there were any problem, the guy from Holland isn't the one who will be doing time in Federal prison, or who will have to pay a lawyer to get him off the hook.

    I regularly send antique firearms to a friend in Holland. He buys one every month and I hold them til he's ready and ship them all together to save $. There are no restrictions on the antiques that the PO should have to worry about.

    I recently sent an antique handgun to the UK via the USPS with no problem at all. It was in one of the "obselete" catridge as defined by the British government so there was no problem at that end. 2 days ago, I received an antique Webley from England also via regular mail. Even though the customs declaration stated it as such, US customs didn't even open the package. The funny thing that the same day my sister received a replacement antenna for her cell phone from Hong Kong and that was inspected by customs!
