As promised, custom mauser .243 report
Using the information supplied by some of you; I went and looked at the custom .243 mauser again. I was on a mission to learn.
1) it is a FN mauser action, with a above average re-blue job.
2) There was no identifaction marks to who made the rifle.
3) The stock, while nicely figured had a wood flaw on the cheek side of the stock that was putty filled and very noticable in sunlight.
4) The stock was re- finished with the action in the stock.
5) There was varnish on the barrel and action, there was dust in the varnish.
6) Bore was dusty but looked pristene.
7) the douglas barrel did not have anything stamped on the receiver end inside the action.
8) he wanted $925.0[;)] for it; but would take 800.00 today and be happy to lose the money.[:D]
9) Some other guy bought it before I got there but had not paid for it yet.....so if I wanted it....you can finish the story.
I never got as far as removing the action to see the trigger but it was grooved.
I appreciate your help in learning what to look for.; hope its new owner has good luck with it, it won't be me.

I don't think you went wrong letting it go with what you saw. An Item like that may go in the $200-400 category. -IMHO

It is just as well you didn't get it, as it sounds like a botched job to me.
Who would intentionally refinish a stock that was still holding a receiver in it ?
How could you tell it was a Douglas barrel ?
Douglas marks the ends of the barrel but it is usually machined off when installed.
Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.0 -
It was stamped "Douglass .243 Win." on the left side of the barrel. It looks like a rifle that somebody sunk way too much money into and it would not shoot. So they traded it off on one that would.
The TASCO scope was obviously from another rifle, was mounted crooked and there were DEEP scratches in the scope tube where the rings go. It looks like someone took a knife and scratched the scope tube ot get it to grip the rings.
It is amazing what people do to perfectly good things to ruin them.0 -
For that kind of money you didn't miss anything. Be happy you didn't buy it. $1000 bucks will buy a very nice used rifle if you shop around a bit.
