AK/SKS QUESTION
I have been looking at sks's and some state that they will take ak mags and some omit this information altogether....is it a difference in model or year manufactured?....how can I tell if it's going to take ak mags if they don't state it?
Another question....is there any sks manufacturers you guys can recommend.....or places to get a good deal besides gb

First of all SKS and ak mags are two different things. Special mags can be used on the sks but you will need to break-down the gun and remove the "fixed" mag before it can take extended mags. You can get the mags at very fair prices, they do not tend to be over-priced. However I recommend a max of 40 round mags. Anything over that and the "curve" in the mag can cause feeding problems.
Besides GB I recommend JG sales in arizona www.jgsales.com for the sks's. Or better yet Las Vegas will be having a gun show May 14th and 15th at the cashman center. Check it out.[:)]

There were some SKS made that took AK mags but they are not very common and cost almost as much as an AK does anymore. That being said if you are going to spend that kind of money the AK is a far better gun.

so to have detachable mag capability it is not necessary to use ak mags......they make sks mags that are removable you just have to remove the original fixed mag?

Yes, but you can always tell the difference between the two. 
AK-47 type mags
SKS type mag
Notice how the sks mag has that extra attachment on it to allow its use where the fixed mag normally would have gone.

SKS are great. They AK's....just a little better. For what 99.9999% of what most people do.....only need to spend the money on an SKS.
If you want a better SKS, by a Russian version with a milled receiver....that is about as good as an SKS gets.0 -
Some folks have used the SKS detachable mags without problem; most of us who tried it found that they didn't work well. I think that the best setup for the SKS is to install a 20 round fixed mag.

SKS's are very realible. And yes; russian SKS's are the best provided you are willing to spend a little more money (I paid in the low 400's for mine, but mine looked like it has never been used. Very shiny bores and only few nicks and scratches on the wood.).
Norinico (chinese SKS's)are for crap. Or at least my opinion of it.

Usually, the SKS that takes AK mags are the SKS-D, the SKS Sporter, and some of the SKS paratrooper versions. My own opinion, they are actually better semi-auto rifles than most of the AK47 versions out there, better inherent accuracy and just as reliable.

one thing to keep in mind, i dont know if any one else has had this problem, but if you go high cap on the sks get a good METAL mag. everytime i have tried to use a zytel(plastic) mag it would not feed properly. i invested in a metal 50 rnder some years ago and it has fed flawlessly for several thousand rounds. also i am sure some will disagree but i have found that the albanian sks is a really sweet shoot, smooth trigger, and very accurate. that put aside I LOVE MY AK!
