Bore snakes

has anyone used these, looks like a good idea, but as we all know anything that is easy probably has a downfall that will surface when its too late.

    Are these effective means for cleaning the barrel of my guns? Will they harm the barrels in any way?

    The bore snakes are fine for general cleaning, and definately a plus to carry in the field for those emergency's, but they will never replace a good boreguide, and swivel handled cleaning rod IMHO....

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    I'll second that, I use them for all my rifles and handguns. But every so often I will break down and do the full on bore scrub and copper removal. Especially if it is to be put away for an extended period, or if it isn't shooting to expectations. I don't put any solvent on the boresnakes as it just goops them up and makes a real mess. Still, just snaking out the bore before and after a shoot seems to put off the need to do the in depth cleaning for enough time to make the cost worth while.

    I've heard nothing but good about boresnakes. However, as mentioned before, they can't compete with the old fashioned rod and tips. BTW, yes they are faster, but again just for simple quick jobs and not thorough procedures.[;)]

    I would tend to agree with the previous posts. They are very nice to take with you to the range and run though the barrel every 5 or so shots. Also very handy to carry while you are hunting in case of anything getting in the barrel. Would definitely recommend cleaning with rod and patches every once in a while though.

    Seems the general concensus is the same as I have been doing. Just seems improper not to scrub the crap out of the gun occasionally. The bore snake just doesn't give me the ols "scrubbed" feeling. I do put a little CLP or GI bore cleaner on mine tho'

    When doing the deep copper removal I'm using the JB paste from Brownells. It seems to do a great job with minimal hassel.

    I used one to do the break-in on an Olympic 223 so I didn't have to punch out the pin after every round and it worked good. I also use them during the season to keep the bore in condition but they are not and were not designed to replace a rod and patches. They are much better than not doing any maintenance.

    I had one for my AR to use at the range but found that a take down AR cleaning rod works better for getting stuck cases out of friends ARs. Never go to the range without a AR Rod / Cleaning kit now.

    When I first got my boresnakes I took a minute and read the back of the package. I know being a male I am treading dangerous ground reading instructions and such, but I use some Rem oil on the snake and pull it through a few times. I have found that it works just as well as a cleaning rod for most applications. As for the snake getting gunked up, throw it in a nylon stocking and run it through the washing machine. Works like a dream.

    Don't think it is a good replacement for a good cleaning rod and bore guide. they only remove minimal fouling.

    But a dewey rod with appropriate jag and bore guide.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
