Winchester 94 in 32 WS. Value ?

I got this in a trade a few weeks ago, and have not had a chance shoot it, or even look it over very much yet. It is a Winchester 94 in 32 WS, serial# 936XX, very little finish on receiver, barrel and mag tube retain 60-70% blue. The mag. tube has several marks or chips on it as if it was resting on something metal for shooting support. The stock has a hairline crack, only on one side {Rt.} near the end of the tang.Both sides of the receiver, near the hammer, have several marks that almost look like they had been hammered on. The gun looks good,and the action functions very well. The bore is bright and shiney. I would like to know approx. value, date of manufacture, and can I use modern ammo in it. Thanks in advance for your help.

    The 5-digit partial serial number you posted can not be correct for a 32 WS chambered Model 1894/94. A 6-digit serial number in the 936,000 range would indicate manufacture circa 1923/24. Please repost with the entire serial number.

    Next, is it a "Rifle" or "Carbine"? If it is a Rifle, what is the barrel contour and length?

    If your gun is in sound mechanical condition, then yes, you can shoot any modern made 32 Winchester Special ammo.

    My Winchester model 1894 in 32 winchester special has a 5 digit serial number,93643. I first thought it was 936,000, with indicated 1923 manufacture too. But it has the five digit serial # posted above, which indicates 1897 manufacture.I don't know the specifications for rifle or carbine, but this gun has a 19.5" barrel
    {from muzzle to breach},and the mag. tube is full length.The front barrel band is flat. Hope this information is helpful.

    Hello Steve...

    You have a piece parts gun that has been rebarreled. To explain further, Winchester did not make/introduce any Model 1894s in 32 WS until June of 1902. The flat front barrel band was only used during WW II (for a 2.5 year period in the later half of the war). I highly suspect that at least the barrel, the magazine tube, and barrel band are about 50 years newer than the receiver/frame. The barrel length is most likely 20-inches (as measured to the back edge of the barrel breech). In the condition you describe, it is worth about $200 (and is actually worth more if you strip it down and sell it as individual parts).
