Thompson Contender or Encore?
Hi, hope someone out there can help. Can anyone tell me the difference between the Encore and the Contender. I have a Thompson, don't know which. It does not have the original barrel. The frame has an engraving on both sides of a mountain lion in gold. The action is opend by the trigger guard. It is in .223 and has a custom made thumbhole manlicher style stock. Hope this is enough information for an answer. Thanks

That's a contender. The encore is a stronger frame to fire up to a .300 win mag where the contender is not able t support such rounds. I have a 30/30 for my contender, but you could get a 45/70 or 375 jdj that thompson started selling as orig. bbls. Another difference is that the encore only fires center fire, while the contender can switch to rimfire.[:)]

earlwellman nailed it , just look at the hammer if it has a selector on top of it to go from rimfire to center fire with safe in the center its a contender, also the 223 was one of the many cals offered 0 -
shouldn't the .223 be loaded down in a Contender?

No you don't have to load down 223
Second not all Contenders have the center fire rim fire selector on the top of the hammer ... there are two generations of Contenders before that era, and both required you to do it via a screwdrive w/ the hammer back.
Beyond that you have a contender and it will permit adjustment of the trigger pull weight, Encores and G2's don't permit that.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
