Marlin "last shot" bolt hold-open

I just got a used 22 auto loader 70HC. It's bolt does not hold open after the last shot. is there a way to fix it? I just cleaned the gun's mechanism hoping that would help, but still no luck. If I push up on the clip magazine when i pull back the bolt, it holds, but not all the time. Is there an adjustment I could make?

    I was allready advised to get a new mag, and i did. no luck though. it was actually worse with the new one. I can't seem to determine what mechanism actually does the "holding open," so I can't tell where to make adjustments.

    I don't know that pistol, but are you sure it is supposed to hold open? I ask because the Colt Woodsman has the lock open feature, but the Huntsman and other "economy" versions do not.

    Whiffleball,

    The magazine follower is what keeps the bolt open, either itself holding the bottom of the bolt or pushing on a lever that holds the bolt. Is the 'new mag' you bought made for that firearm or is an aftermarket mag that will fit that series? Look to see if there is a taper down at the back of the follower.
    You may be experiencing a poor operating spring also, The bolt goes back far enough to catch the next round but not quite far enough to catch the follower. Make sure that area is all clean too. Gunk in that area will eventually lead to not loading properly also. Dis-assemble,clean then lube with a light coat of oil.

    Sorry, didn't fully understand the post. Check where the magazine catch is. That may be worn down and not holding up the magazine properly too.

    I think maybe your rifle wasn't designed for the bolt to stay open. Lots of .22's never had that feature. The early Ruger series of .22 auto pistols didn't for example, and I have some Marlin autos that don't either.
