Plainfield M1 Carbine Help
We have a Plainfield M1 Carbine with a stainless barrel and a very low serial number D1**. Gun is unfired no box and all original . Has Plainfield Machine Co. on receiver .Any idea on value ?

Yeah, Plainfield is on the low end for M1 carbines.

This is stainless barrel and receivver with a D1** serial number. Could this possibly be a collectors piece that they made ? 0 -
Hey MFI. Last year when I was trying to get some info on what I considered as a stainless Thompson I learned a couple of things about stainless military weapons. IF, I repeat, IF it's a legitimate piece manufactured by a KNOWN contractor of military weapons it usually indicates a limited run of very few pieces for TESTS BY THE NAVY. Otherwise, it's anyone's guess. And you're probably right that it was a piece designed for consideration for promotion of a collectors' series.
Ever seen another even offered for sale? Any of the numerous widely read references on the carbine even mention a stainless version?
After several months on one forum my Thompson "ODDBALL 27A1," as it came to be known, ran up 26 pages of discussion. It was even suggested that it might be a "lunch bucket" gun someone built at work and gave a serial number within a legitimate range, then walked out with it piece by piece.
MOST IMPORTANT, KEEP ASKING. Try questioning in every gun forum you can find, you just might hit someone who has the answers you need. Good luck with your search.
