Best Plinker .223 or .17HMR

Trying to put together a tack driver for under $500.00 Which platform would be better for doing this hat trick?

    Go with the .223 ammo is way cheaper and you can get it everywhere. Look at the savage model 40 in .22 hornet too.

    I agree with the .223. It's a much more versatile round and you will be thankful you chose it on a windy day. The .17HMR is a decent round out to about 150-200 yards, but when you hit that range accuracy and trajectory will drop. Just my opinion, but i would never buy a gun chambered for the .17HMR. If you don't mind my asking what exactly do you plan on using the gun for?

    I bought a Savage 12FVS (bull barrel, single shot, synthetic stock) - for $335. Added an $80 6-24x44 BSA scope, on top of Leupold base & rings.....goes .5" 7 shot groups at 100 yards. Under 1.0" at 200.

    BUT...remember rifle twist...if you buy a rifle with a 1:7 to 1:9 twist....you will be going with the heavier bullets...as in 68/69 grain pills to be accurate. The 35-62 grain pills are spinning to fast to be accurate with the fast twist....I tried...oh...30 or so rounds with the lighter bullets...the groups were 2.5" to nearly 6.0 inches at 100 yards.

    For p-dogs the 17 would be fine I've heard of shots over 200yds with them, but if you plan on going for anything bigger I'd go with the 223.

    If your going to be doing varmit hunting as well than I would definitely reccomend the .223 over the .17HMR. Another option if you haven't thought about it already is the 22-250. With this you will get roughly 200-300 ft/sec. faster and its a little flatter shooting than the .223. I think that you would be happy with either one though.
