Lyman Great Plains Rifle accuracy
I'm new to "traditional" Black Powder shooting but would like to shoot 50 & 100 yd matches with a local BP club. I'm looking into a 50 cal. Lyman Great Plains Rifle [not the "Hunter" version], with 32" 1:60 twist barrel, for shooting round ball only. Is the 1:60 twist considered optimum for round ball ? What kind of accuracy might I expect to get at 100 yds with a Great Plains rifle ? Thanks for the info..

Both of my brothers have the same rifle, one of the brothers shoots his pretty frequently and is becoming very comfortable with it. When plinking at 50-75 yards a beer can is dead every shot offhand. He also told me his 100 yard 5 shot groups are 2" and he hates to shoot from the bench, he thinks the rifle is better than he is. He found that a medium size charge is his most accurate in his .50 cal.( I think he's shooting about 65 grains as his accuracy load.). 0 -
The one I owned years ago was the most accurate muzzle loader I have ever owned with the exception of my custom one and it doesn't shade the Lyman by very much. Damn fine rifle. 0 -
The biggest key to accuracy will be the balls, patch, and then the shooter. The balls have to be the right size, and very soft lead. The patch has to be cut the proper size, and properly lubricated. As stated, accuracy is usually much better with a medium load. Then it is up to the shooter. 0
