Springfield 1873 Trap-door Carbine

I have one of these to evaluate. No problem comparing pages in Blue Book, Flayderman, and the other references. This gun does not have any serial number. Before I take it apart to see what the insides tell me, were guns of this model sold without the s/n? This thing is better than 95% and I want to sell it but do not want to misrepresent it if it is a fake. Other than the missing s/n it looks like the real McCoy.

    My data shows that over 60,000 Carbines were manufactured between 1873 & 1889, all serial numbered. You have either somebodys "lunchbox special" or something put together from parts by Bannerman or some other surplus arms dealer in the early 20th Century, when the military desposed of the parts.

    Page 696 of Dixie Gun Works 2002 catalog.
    "It is true that the serial numbers of all types of rifles and carbines run consecutively except the Offices and the Marksman rifles which are NOT NUMBERED."
    I should think this might cause it to have higher value.

    Gruntled--sorry to disagree with you, but the Officers and Marksman models are RIFLES, not carbines. Have to go with Rufe-snow comments.
