Early Ruger 22 pistol question

A buddy of mine has picked up an early ruger .22 pistol, sn 113xxx. It's beat up pretty good, but should be a good plinker. It has target grips (stocks) on it and also needs a magazine. Will Mk II grips and mags fit (or be easily modified to fit) or will he have to find a MK 1 (?) mag and grips? Thanks!

    My understanding is that the Mark II grips will not work on a Mark I.

    You can still buy a magazine directly from Ruger for the Mark I (the Mark II magazine will not work):

    The later mark I's and standards can use the mark 2 mags and grips, unfortunately yours is much too old. Mark 1 parts are still out there.

    Yours sounds like a pre-Mark I, and yes, it's a superb plinker. The slide won't lock open after the last shot, other than that, I really love that gun.

    Just for gee whiz, I think the only difference in grips between the Mark I and Mk II is the Mk II has a bolt release on the left side that the Mk I does not have since it's bolt cannot be locked open, and the grips are cut out for this. These are excellent guns.

    Grips won't work, but the later magazines will work. Just have to take it apart and put the button the other side. I have two that I did it on for an original "standard" model, pre Mark I

    You can use the mags that have cutouts on BOTH sides. Run the floorplate all the way down, hold it there, and remove button. Replace button on other side.

    Right on, mags I can get from ruger OR use MK 2. I missed a set of grips on evilbay yesterday. I'll watch on gunbroker and those other auction sites and see if I can find him a set cheap. Thanks for the replies.

    You have a Ruger 22 auto pistol with the A54 grip frame used from 1949 to about 1971.Models after that date used the A100 grip frame that can use MKII grips.The A54 grip frame was used with both Standard and MKI target models and has a magazine with the loading button on the right side of the magazine.Models with the A100 grip frame have the loading button on the left side of the magazine like MKII models.Newer mags can be used in older guns by switching the loading button to the other side of the magazine.A gunsmith could redrill your grip frame so you could use the newer grips.I would not do this with a gun in better condition.

    I just finished looking at the latest catalog from "Cheaper Than Dirt"
    and they sell the mags for a Mark I. Go to their website and you should find them.
