better deal under $1000
what would u guys rather have for long range target/varmint? an ar-15 setup, or a tareget model of the cetme/hk 91 style rifle? i know there are more accessories for the ar-15 rifles, but i like the 91 style, caliber, and looks. any advise would be greatly appreciated. which one would u say is more accurate past 500 yards? (as far as your average target/varmint ar or 91) thanks

If I were you (and I own a couple of my own) I would go out and buy either a Savage 12FV(FP) or a Remington 700 Police in .308 Win. That way you can have a black, military looking rifle that will do some pinpoint shooting at ranges between 500-1000 yds. That is of course you top it with a good Scope with some kind of range finding device and learn how to dope the wind really really well.
On the other hand, there are many calibers out there that shoot as accurate, if not more, and flatter than the .308 Win. I mention it because it is so popular, and you can buy one right over the counter and not have to tinker with it. The .223 loses too much oomph when it goes beyond 600 yds., but Remington and Savage sell them in .223 also.
Now, if you have to have an AR style or HK style I will say this: There are aftermarket companies and manufacturers of AR Style rifles that make good accuracy rifles in .223. A few of them make them in the AR10 config.(.308). I can't say for sure, but, I know of no one that makes a match grade HK in this country. I'm not saying it isn't true you just don't see them where I'm at. If so they are more than 2 grand.
However, There are M1A's that are match graded and shoot extremely well out to 800M. Springfield Armory and Fulton Armory are a couple of makers. Again, they run just under/over 2 grand to buy one.
Bottom line: The Savage 12FV runs under 500 and "is as accurate as anything out there off the shelf"

Bolt gun if you serious about popping varmits at extended ranges, but a 223 at 500 yards on small varmits will be pushing it.
Even a tricked out AR with a heavy match grade 24" barrel will run you over 1000.00
Now you throw in a after market trigger, scope, base, rings and bi-pod, you well over that 1000.00 mark.
But if you get a nice Bolt gun such as a Savage 10FP 308, you got a good 1K gun out of the box. Go with a Rem700 PSS if you plan to have it tricked out by a smith later on.
My entire Savage setup cost me about 1600.00 with optics and I use it out to 1K all the time. It is a sub MOA gun out of the box.0 -
For varmints you want a bolt action rifle. Military is not the way to go for this application. 0 -

Both retail for around $1000, and RR guarantees 3/4 moa with factory ammo. Like most guns, you may be able to pay a good bit under retail if you look hard enough.
