Hello I think you will find that most gunsmiths measure the degrees it will take to line up the barrel look at threads per inch and then compute how much they need to turn off the shoulder of the barrel to have sights to line up but then they also use a chamber reamer to deepen the chamber that same amount. If you want to "BUBBA" gun smith and the overtravel is just a small amount you can peen the shoulder slightly to keep the barrel from turning in as far. This is not the approved way of doing the job

PERRY SHOOTERS ADVISE IS GOOD BUT I TAKE EXCEPTION TOT THE PART "If you want to "BUBBA" gun smith and the overtravel is just a small amount you can peen the shoulder slightly to keep the barrel from turning in as far. This is not the approved way of doing the job". THIS IS THE WAY M-1/M-14 BARRELS WHERE FITTED AT DEPOT MANTAINCE, THEY EVEN HAD A SPECIAL FIXTURE TO DO THIS.

Mike Thanks for the infomation on the M14 I did not realize a factory ever did this operation . I alway try for as much contact To the shoulder area as possible. I have seen some real botched jobs on Colt single actions and all brands of rifles with oct barrels most times with peening where it would not show and a very small gap where it would show if it was peened this leaves a barrel with tension on one side only . If you could deform the barrel evenly all the way around it could work but this type of work would need special tooling I would think.

I saw a reference to this on a site regarding assembly of FAL kits. They recommended using a shim.
