300 ultra
anyone reload for the 300 ultra? just curious, and wanna hear about some proven loads. I've never reloaded anything, but i have a professor from a local school that is gonna help me in a couple of weeks. WE're gonna start out with my 223 and let me get the hang of it, then start workin on the 300. i just wanna have some idea of what he's talkin about. haha u know...

I am buying a new elk rifle, probably Browning.
The 300 ultra mag caught my eye, but Browning has dropped it from it's line after only a short period of time. Can anyone tell me why?
I have heard it is because of the new short mag, even though the ballistics on the Ultra are better than the short mag.

For a barn burner like the 300 UltraMag, or any other very fast mag, I would consider a chronograph a must have tool. If you can't measure the velosity then it is all guess work. If you don't get up towards the max velosity then there was no good reason to buy the UltraMag over the WinMag, Weatherby or any other mag. I've reloaded for the last twenty years and am still learning. The .223 will be a good starters rifle cartridge, but remember the powders used there will be very different the those used in the UltraMag. As for accuracy the tool I find most useful in gauging how good a reload I've made is some kind of "run out" measuring device like the RCBS case master. Overall cartridge length, velosity, straightness, powder charge: if you can't measure all of these factors, accurately, then it is all vodoo. 0 -
I handload .375 Ultra and have some friends that play with 7mm and .300 Ultra's. It is possible to gain a considerable amount of velocity over factory Remington loads. For my .375, Remington factory 300 gr. is 2760 FPS, but using maximum listed loads I have cloacked my 300 gr. handloads at an average of 2967 FPS with 13 FPS S.D. That means an energy gain of nearly 800 FPE. I also save almost $2 per round.
Simply put, the Ultra mags are handloaders cartridges.

H1000, RL25, and Retumbo have all gone sub .5moa and often down into the .3's and even some in the .2' and .1's in my 30" PacNor tube with 200 and 216gr pills. 88.0gr of H1000 with the 200gr SMK was my first match load for ~3100fps but I have found Retumbo with the 216gr Clinch River to be somewhat more friendly and at 3200+fps[8D] I lite that much powder with 215M's. A tight chamber and heavy bullets make for loose primer pockets at about 6 firings, but hey,..this ain't no toy so play time takes money[:D]
The RUM is made for heavy bullets and slow powders. If you wish to use 180gr class pills and the faster powders, then don't waste your time. I can't say this enough, the RUM is a powder burning, big long pill launching machine. You do NOT need the RUM for light bullets from 180gr and less. They are suprisingly accurate and will carry the energy to the target. Be ready for recoil.
I have a 338RUM project in the works and have loaded for the 7RUM. They are great performers, but not really suited to close up work or small game with little bullets.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

They are ballistic twins. The advantage to the RUM is that it can be had in standard sporting rifles at an affordable price.

yep,.lapua is overpriced for no reason (brass is much better, but not worth that much $$). The TRG is overpriced as well, but that is an OPINION of mine. I have several Sako actions and they are fine peices,..but a rem700 can be built to more exacting specs for less than the TRG price off the shelf and still requiring work.
I like the standard magnum boltface of the RUM as well, the lapua needs the 416rigby boltface[:(] The rem700's are NOT supposed to be opened up far enough on the bolt face to use the LM, not that they won't handle it action wise, but the boltface will have little steel left surrounding the casehead and compromising the "third ring of steel".
