WANT INFO ON .22 SPRINGFIELD ORDNANCE MDL. 71 & 72

This hefty little .22rf.handgun is accompanied by a .25acp conversion kit, thereby earning TWO Model Numbers on its instruction sheet. I also have the original PO box. I'm looking for written documentation on why this gun was designed and for what purpose. I've heard the tall stories about it being a CIA project, which I find hard to swallow. Anyone got any FACTS?
