Remove barrel from 7400

I am trying to remove my barrel from a Remington 7400. Can this be done at home or do i need to take it to a gunsmith?

    Yes, you could do it yourself. But may I ask, why do you want to remove it? RJSnow

    I assume that you are the guy who ran over his gun. Ok it needs a new barrel right. Are you familar with head space gages (gauges) And setting said headspace? If not, you might as well go shoot yourself in the head now. this will reduce your odds of being a vegetable for the next 30 years. Now if you are a competent gunsmith go for it. I suspect that having to ask how to take the barrel off is a clue that you are not a competent gunsmith. But that is just a guess. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    No, did not run it over. Just wanted to re-blue it. It has gun rack marks on it. It sounds like its more work that what i want to get involved with.

    Now I can see what you want. It is not a big deal to remove the barrel from the model 7400 (or the 7600 for that matter). You do not need a barrel vice or headspace gauges. You will need a plastic faced hammer, proper size punch and proper size open end wrench.

    Simply remove the forearm by removing the large screw in the front of the forearm. Drive out the cross-pin in the barrel lug (the square thing on the bottom of the barrel). Push the action tube support (the piece the cross-pin held in place) back to clear the gas jet (it protrudes from the rear of the barrel lug) and lift it up so you can remove the gas tube. The action spring will come out at the same time and may be under some pressure. Next, remove the barrel take-down nut and forend spring. Now pull the barrel forward from the receiver and carefully turn it 45 degrees so that the barrel lug can exit the action bars. Assemble in reverse.

    It is a good idea to take some digital camera photos so you will know exactly what you did and the proper placement of parts.
