Ruger M77 MKII All-Weather .22-250-Accuracy

I'm looking for a varmint gun that I can use for coyotes and foxes. I recently posted a topic about a used Rem. VS-SF .22-250, and really appreciate all the input received. However, I also do a lot of rabbit hunting and will be packing it on hikes quite a bit. That's my hesitation about the heavy-barrel varmint guns...will the weight be too uncomfortable to pack for extended amounts of time? Also, on jack rabbits, will a 26" heavy barrel be a bit slow to swing around and bring on target?

So, I'm now thinking about something lighter with a shorter barrel. I realize I will give up a bit in velocity and accuracy, but I'm curious to hear just what kind of accuracy most of you get with these lighter carry rifles. In particular, I kind of like the Ruger All-Weather model in a .22-250 with a 22" barrel. Thanks for you help.

    I like Ruger's Rifles and have an .243 All-Weather Ultra-Light. I find it to be very accurate with almost all ammo. It does heat up quicker than a regular barrel, but I can get off 5 or 6 shots real quick with no problems on accuaracy. I also have a .270 Ruger that is very accurate.

    I believe that all major firearm companies make accurate rifles. It is impossible to say how a rifle will shoot until you do just that (shoot it).

    If you buy the All-Weather Ruger im sure you wont be dissapointed.

    Just a thought.....

    If your budget is very tight you may want to look at a Remington 788. They are light, accurate and balance pretty well for off hand shooting. Another plus is that they are not so expensive that you feel bad when you ding the maple/birch stock [;)]. They are available for around 300 bucks on the GB site and are a good value for an accurate rifle.

    Probably 1.5-2 moa. This is from a poor shooter. Also this is factory ammo. With Black Hills Gold ammo and a good shot it is probably 1 moa.

    Never really measured the groups but they were minute of coyote. [:D]

    It's not the caliber you mention, but I recently bought a stainless M77 in 22 magnum. Put a 3x9 Leupold scope on it and use it for the same game you mention. It will hold groups you can cover with a dime at 75 yards. I have killed varmits at 200 yards with it but that is stretching the range a bit. Have not weighed the rig but it weighs about half what my 30-06 does. A real pleasure to carry all day.

    Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.

    I carried my rem700 sendero SF (same rifle in a magnum caliber) all day long in WY this year and although it weighed a bit, I had no problem. The only time it was tough was during a hands and knees and belly crawl stalk that covered some 200-300yds in the sage brush.

    That being said, if you are looking at a 22" barrel, the 22-250 is kind of wasted. I would drop back to the .223 if I went with a short barrel. my02

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    reports say that the new savage with the accu trigger system is the most accurate on the market, and the least expencive

    deerhunting.jpg it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

    Olsenjb, I tend to agree with 1armbandit, you seem to be more in the market for a 22WMR than a 22-250, especially if you want a short barrelled rifle as JustC pointed out as well. My $.02

    Sorry...I don't quite follow that if I'm going with a 22" barrel, then I'm wasting the .22-250 and should go with a .223? Could you explain that to me? I realize I lose velocity with a shorter barrel, but isn't that true with any caliber? I'm going to lose velocity with the .22-250, as well as a .223, so why not go with the faster of the two to begin with? Or am I missing something?
