Year of Manufacture, Remington 742?

I just bought a used 742 Woodsmaster in 6mm Rem., SN: 113228. Can someone tell me when it was made? From what I understand it's a fairly rare caliber. How rare? I've been to the Remington website and couldn't find any help.

The info or a gentle nudge in the right direction would be appreciated!

    There is a date code on the barrel. The "Blue Book" has a "decoder" in the back to help you fix the year of manufacture.

    According to the B B it was only made for 1 year, ( 1963 ). Their pricing doesn't seem valid though, for a calber that was only produced for one year. They value it the same as for the 30-06 that was in production between 1960 & 1980.

    The 742 chambered for 6mm was produced from 1963 to 1980 with a total of 24,313 copys produced. The "date code" on the barrel left side just forward of the reciever will tell the month and year of manufacture. In your case it will be a two letter code, such as "B K"

    Something ain't right here. If it was made from 63-80, why is the code from OCT 62? EJ...?

    The remington site says the 742 was made from 60-80. OK. Then why does it give a SN listing for the 742 from 51-81?

    The rifle is in good shape and it's a shooter not a wallhanger. I'm just curious as to why there is so much contradictory info out there.

    Am I not reading this right?

    RUFE-SNOW - I can't believe its a REALLY rare gun. I only paid $336 for it.

    The 742 was introduced on Jan.6 1960 as a replacement for the Mod.740. The 740 was on the market for only five years<1955--1960> The Mod.740 ended production in 1960 at serial number 253821. the 742 started production with serial number 1001 in 1960. The initial serial number sequence of the 742 ended with # 396562 on 11-26-68 as a result of the gun control act of 1968. The new block of numbers starting at A69000000 was shared with the mod.760.

    Very simple answer... the date code on the barrel is when the barrel was manufactured... not the entire rifle. Does it not make perfect sense that individual parts would have been made at least a few months before the rifle was assembled? If the 6mm version of the Model 742 was not introduced until 1963, you are only talking about a scant few months difference in the barrel manufacture date.

    Thanks Bert. I got the same answer from Remington via email today. The barrel was made in '62, the gun was assembled and serial numbered in '63.

    I still think I got a good deal!
