Refinished gun values??

I have several S&W revolvers, I shoot them all. Some, like the 25-2 .45ACP has been shot very little (2,000 rds) and has about 98% orginal bluing with the normal wear on the sharp edges of the cylinder crane. I take care of my guns, but do not pamper them.

If I ever decided to send it to S&W for a tune up would having the factory reblue it reduce the eventual collectors value of the gun?

    This is tricky to answer becuase their are really two markets out there. Purest. Then there are guys would rather have a bright and shiny piece. I don't that you could ever recover the expense of such a venture though. that kind of factory work ain't the cheapest.

    I shoot all my guns, plus I like them to look really nice. So, having said that, I have had all my shotguns reblued and planning on having all the metal parts on my sks done. I get it done cheap because my grandad's a gunsmith and he does a great job. What about the value? Big deal about the value. If I wanted an investment it wouldnt be a gun.

    sweaver offers an opinion, but your question indicates you have different feelings about the value of your guns. In the strictest sense having them refinished destroys collector value, but having guns "restored" is a diffent equasion. Tobefree is correct, it is a tricky question, because a factory re-blue is different, from a collectors perspective, than other re-blues, and might be considered part of a restoration, of other work is done to restore the condition. That said, unless you are selling an old and very valuable firearm, you probably will never recover the cost of the work in any inhanced condition and sale price increase. Probably better to take really good care of them, and don't re-blue.

    If you are like me, I never sell any of my guns, and I shoot them all, am saving them for my grand kids, so I really don't care what the value is, in the collectors sense of the equation, cuz I am never gonna sell them anyway!
    That being said, I can not stand to have any firearm that looks like S..t, if it does, I just don't want to use it at all. So I clean them up, and restore them myself, and if they need re-blueing, then I send them out to the gunsmith, and have that done by a professional.
    I have never been sorry about any of the guns that I have re-done, and it makes them much more fun to take out to the range, show off to all your buddies, and then shoot like crazy! Makes for a great weekend!
