new rifle!
just bought another rifle today. remington 700 LSS in 300 RUM. It's a very good lookin rifle. everyone tells me that the recoil is unbearable, but i think i can handle it. i'm 19 years old, 6'2" and 205 pounds. any guys out there who have had some experience with this cartridge? plz tell me bout the recoil, accuracy, and i'd love to hear how it preformed on game. thanks

My uncle won one a few years back. It is a Browning A-bolt Medallion. The fancy engraving and all. Monster recoil!! 26 barrel, gun weighs probably 7 1/2-8lbs. Very accurate though. I have a weighted vise, maybe 4 lbs and it will pick it 6 inches off the bench with 180 gr Federal Premiums!! It kicks a bunch more than the 338 Win Mag or 300 win mag, (shot all three the same day). The vise keeps it managable, but would hate not to have it. I'm 6'3" 220lbs. Call me a wimp of you want but I like my 6.5X55 a LOT better for pleasure shooting!! SHould be an excellent western cartridge. But don't think it will be THAT much better than the 300 or 338 for the price you pay!! They have been performing excellent on elk/moose/bear for a long time before the Ultra/short ultra/super shorts etc... 0 -
Sendero,I have a model 700LS in the 300RUM and it is a excellent shooting rifle.Mine has the bull barrel.I used it a couple of times in a 1,000yd shoot and was impressed.The recoil is nasty after about five shots,but nothing that you can't handle.You might want to think about getting a brake installed if it is too unconfortable for you.If you get the brake installed,be ready for alot of noise.Good luck and enjoy your new toy.[:D] Al 0 -
Not to start an argument here or anything, but if i were you i would have went with a .300 win mag instead of the UM. In my mind the UM's are a little overrated. You are paying twice as much for each bullet whether you reaload or buy them and are getting basically the same performance with less recoil and less wear on the barrel. Nevertheless from what i hear about the RUM you should love it. Accuracy is said to be the same as the .300 and your getting about 100-150 ft/sec. more with a speer 220 partition in your RUM.(I have a .300 win mag and its a tack driver so accuracy for your RUM shouldn't be a problem at all). 0 -
Still dont understand why you went and got one when a 300 weatherby mag is better than both the win mag and the rem ultra mag its more accurate. Although if you did get a 300 weatherby only use factory weatherby ammo for dead on accuracy.

Cyclonus, most guns can be very accurate with the right combination of powder, bullets, etc. when realoading and a good shooter with a good scope. Besides that, the kid said he was 19 years old, im sure at that age he doesn't want to fork out the crazy amount of money for a box of .300 weatherby shells when accuracy and ballistics are almost identical. I will say that all 3 calibers are very good all-around, but i will stick with my good ole' .300 win mag that takes 20-30 grains less of powder to do the same job as the other two. That right there adds up to a lot of wasted money on the other two. 0 -

Yeah 40$ a box is dang expensive but it still outshoots the others I dont see 300 win mag or 300 RUM zero on 300 yds.

great gun great cal . i read all responses and most are uninformed, it is a true 1 mi. shooter if you have the ability, markT is wrong when he says he's uncle has one in a browning because browning is a winchester company and has not produced a rummy. i have one but i had to take a win mag and rechamber it to the rummy, recoil is heavy but i have a boss on mine,(tames it down to about 22-250 or 243 recoil) and if you want info my son knows a gun smith that can make one for you or you can look in my past posts and find a post i made about a year ago asking about a after market boss that the original engineer for it responded that he would help me make one. i think it would pay to have a boss if you plan to fire it alot it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!0 -
Stalion10 is definitely right about the boss, they are an excellent way to reduce the recoil and i think would definitely be worth it. Also, he's right about the Browning. They are only made in the .300 win mag and .300 WSM i do believe. 0 -
My .300 WIN has been AWESOME on Mule Deer and adaquite an Elk.
So I believe your .300 RUM will be all that and more.
