Refinishing a Smith & Wesson Revolver
I was considering having a late 50's or early 60's S&W Revolver that I own reblued. I am looking for suggestions as to where to send it to have this done. I would like to find someone who would do a first class job minus botching the lettering or rounding the corners. I would like to have the nice "bright blue" done to it. I live in the central part of Wisconsin. It would be nice to find someone close that could do it where I could just drive and take it there myself.

If you want a first class job done, I would suggest sending it to Smith & Wesson for the work.
I know that it may not be driveable for you, but its not a big deal to ship it to them for the work. I assume you know that by refinishing the gun you will be decreasing its value slightly, but if you are keeping it, its not an issue.
Smith will do a first class job. I would suggest sending a letter with the gun explaining exactly what you want done.

While I agree with Lefty, I don't think that it's worth shipping a gun like this unless you have an FFL willing to mail/receive it for a nominal fee. If you ship yourself, you must use UPS/FEDEX Next Day Air/Adult Signature Required, which will easily cost $60-70 each way. It may be better to use someone local & possibly get a lower quality refinish.

Dennis Potter from Potter Gunsmithing is in Muskego, Wi. (414) 425-4830 He instructs blueing classes at Trinidad Gunsmithing School in Colorado in the summers. Maybe he is close enough to help.

Dennis does do great work...I've seen some of his stuff in the last few years and was wholely impressed. If the location is not good for you, try Mike at Dam Road Gunshop (just North of Delavan); he has a line on some pretty good area people as well.

I would send the gun to Smith & Wesson. My shop is about 4 miles from the main plant in Springfield, Ma. I have work done there from time to time. There revolver reblue runs around 165 for starters. When the gun goes back together they test fire it and will call you. The last gun I sent them for work the guy called me after he got off the line and said... Guns ready... two shots.. one hole... come get it.. The fastest way to get the work done is prepay... seems to get to the top of the line faster.. I did try contacting Smith & Wesson about rebluing my revolver. The problem is that because of the age and the type of high polish finish on it they cannot help me. They apparently no longer do that type of finish and could only offer me their now more matte type of finish instead. This would not be an acceptable solution for myslef. 0 -
You might try Robar in Pheonix, Arizonia @6232-581-2648. They are not cheap but they do great work. I've had 2 rifles and a 1911 Colt refinished by them and the workmanship is first rate. It will involve shipping the revolver to them and getting it back that way but it's worth considering. Jim 0
