Twist rate Savage .223
Can someone tell me the twist rate for the Savage Mod.12FV chambered in .223? I'm thru with the NEF Handi Rifle as it is NOT what I had hoped for in terms of consistensy in the accuracy dept. Yes it's ok for hunting but I want better accuracy in a .223. Now don't tell me I should buy a Browning, or a Sako, or a Weatherby, I don't drive a Rolls Royce, I drive a Buick and I'm not about to spend money on a name. I like what I've been hearing about the Savage line as far as accuracy is concerned and am seriously considering the Mod. 12FV 26 in barrel and AccuTrigger! would like to know the twist rate.

look at the remington ADL. they are right there in price with the savage and look much better

Dewayne,I have a model 12BVSS in the 223 and it is a excellent shooting rifle.Mine has the 1 in 9 twist.They are hard to beat and priced right also.Ammo is easy to find and pretty reasonable priced.I don't think you can go wrong with the Savage.Good luck and enjoy.[:D] Al 0 -

They might look better but they aren't.The new Savage trigger is hard to beat.My 2 cents.[:)]

You will find that handloading will bring your Savage down to amazing accuracy. I have a 10PF in both .223 and .308. By fine tuning my handloads, I have been able to bring 100m shot groups to less than .5 MOA. I have not bedded it, I only have a BSA scope on it, and that is it. It took me about 30 seconds with the Accu-trigger to bring it down to about a 1 lb pull. Can you tell I am sold on Savage?
I have shot almost every long range rig from all over the world, and carried an M21 for years. A friend of mine suggested this rifle - at which I snubbed my nose. But he never gave me bad info so I went on his word. On the first day I shot it at the range, I went to the gun shop before going home and bought another in a different caliber.
To answer your questions, it is 1:9.
Sorry to go on, but this is a company that is getting snubbed nosed by remington-ites only because those who own a Savage have a gun that is of equal accuracy an still have money left over for other things.

I don't see savage being snubbed by remington GENIUSES[}:)][:D] at all,...as a matter of fact, WE quite often complement the savages for their accuracy and especially their price point. The remington 700 will hold the top honor UNTIL the aftermarket and custom manufacturers make as many TOP NOTCH parts for the savages as they do for the remington. The rem700 is basicaly the chevy 350cid V8 of the rifle world. There are far more parts available, and they are usually cheaper than the same part for another engine, hence the proliferation of 350cid powered hot-rods on the street. And, the trigger is still one of the best designs in a factory rig (if you know what you're doing).
I wouldn't tell you to buy a weatherby regardless,but that's my opinion. Sako makes a damn fine rifle, very smooth, and true, but pricey (although the sako seems to be priced fairly well). Brownings shoot consistently, and are priced OK, but a bit high also. I have them all, so I can make these statements with conviction.
That being said, the savage 12BVSS that I worked with in 300win mag is a VERY ACCURATE rifle and attractive to boot. If I were to be looking at the savage for an all out accurate 223, it would be the 12BVSS with accutrigger.

Thanks for the info on the twist rate of the Savage. I know all about the Rem 700 and your comparison with the Chev.350 as i have both the Rem.700(classic .300Sav.) and the Chev.350 only my 350 is missing two cylenders and is called the 4.3. I'm interested in the Savage for two reasons, 1, out of the box accuracy reputation and 2, price. I don't intend to "hot rod" it much, just a good Leupold. And I've been reloading since around 1965.

I would think that a heavy barreled savage with decent glass like you suggest, will be more than satisfactory for you. Like I said, the 12bvss 300win I worked with goes 1/2 moa all day long with hornady custom 165gr SST ammo. Very good shooter[^]
