Remington VS-SF .22-250

I have the chance to purchase a Remington VS-SF (NOT the new VS-SF II model) .22-250 used, and I was hoping to get some thoughts about this rifle. Has anyone here shot one? What do you think? The seller of this rifle claims he has shot less than 300 rounds through it, and it comes with the original box and user's manual. He's asking $650, but is willing to negotiate a bit. Is it worth $650? If not, what is it worth? Thanks for all of your help.

    you can buy them for about $500.00-$550.00 new with out scope

    deerhunting.jpg it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

    Looking back through the auction for the last 90 days, I don't see one that has sold for less than $650 ... I'd say it's a good price.

    Show me where the VSSF NOT the VS is sold for $500-$550[?] The DEALER COST on the VSSF is almost $700 in the Jerry's Sports Wholesaler catalog for FFL's. I have that rifle in 220 swift and can tell you that it, and it's big brother in 7mm rem mag are superb rifles[8D] These will go under 1moa very easily with many ammunitions and with the right factory ammo will hold 1/2moa out to 300yds and further. With handloads, my swift is 1/4moa if the shooter does his part.

    If you want a high quality, accurate, long range rifle, you should buy this one and not look back. However, 300rnds can be harsh if he didn't allow cooling time between shot strings, the 22-250 is a hot round. Be sure of the throat condition before buying and try for $600

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    i have a laminate 22-250 varmint, but not fluted.... i bought it nib for 535 from what i remember on the model you're talking about if you have pics to see... i dont think he's asking an unfair price..

    The bore needs to be very clean. No fouling. Then remove the bolt and get a bright light bulb to reflect down the barrel. Look VERY close at the throat and the begining of the rifling. Move the barrel at different angles to catch the light as needed. The bore should appear smooth and shiney. It takes care and time to look for tell-tale rough spots or a darkness just in front of the chamber. If it looks like a mirror it is probably OK. If it has dark spots and rough edges to the rifling it has been burned or possibly could be BADLY fouled.

    The owner also claims that the 300 rounds have ALL been moly coated bullets. Does this change what I should look for when checking it out? Is this a good or bad thing in your opinion?

    I would inquire as to the owner allowing you to completely clean the barrel. Moly is a black compund which adheres to metal, so a moly coated barrel will be less like a mirror and more like a dull greyish color. Once you get down to bare metal, you can look and see what's what. A good way to "feel" an eroded throat is to gently run a semi-tight patch just into the bore and slowly work it back and forth for about 3 inches. If it feels like it drags across the surface of the bore at the beginning, and then smooths out for the remaining 80% of the length, that is erosion and fire-cracking. If it feels smooth from the throat on foreward, it is likely it is in good condition. If this guy knows what he is doing, and has allowed the PROPER cooling time (not gotten the barrel hot enough to brand cattle) the throat should be just fine, especially with all bullets being moly coated.

    The only true way to see the erosion/cracking is with a bore-scope. maybe the gunshop has one, call around to a few and see. If they have one, get them to check the throat and pay them to do so.

    These are very accurate rifles. I will in the future, probably collect them as I think they are superbly built and will be the next "pre-64 winchesters" some 20 yrs from now.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
