What is this odd 30-30 Bullet ?
The case is a Remington 30-30 with a factory primer. It has an aluminum flat bullet. There is powder in the shell. It almost looks like a wad cutter. Does anyone have any ideas ?

Hello I think this is a cartridge that was sold over 20 years ago in a 4 pack the intent was to be used by hunters if injured or lost and they are a FLARE CARTRIDGE . I would be careful and not try to take apart as I think air starts them burning. 0 -
I've been wrong before, but it looks to me like a lyman 150 grain lead cast roundnose put in backwards. The little radius at the heel is what leans me in that direction. I grew up in heavily wooded areas of Michigan where your average shot was about 60 yds, and for some reason the old guy's locally liked to use this combination as it was supposedly devastating at these ranges and the bullets inherent inaccuracy was not so telling that close-up. Always sounded like horsesh** to me, but who knows; different strokes for different folks!
Having gone with the guess I did, I would STILL say it's a good idea to leave it alone just in case it IS a flare type. Shooting it could be interesting as I figure making that kind of jump to the rifling with a radiused heel instead of the Ogive type might be a little on the exciting side of things! Up to you, but I would add it to the cartridge collection and go with the story of the aerial flare...sound's alot more interesting than a mis-seated lead RN!

No - it is not a lead bullet. It is made of Aluminum or some other very light weight material. I am a handloader and this is a factory bullet. I like the flare idea best. thanks..... 0 -
It could also be a 30-30 shotshell ive seen stuff like this before in handloaded 45 LC shotshells where a copper disc is used as a wad and as the top of the shell. at least that would explain why it is so lightwieght. Try shooting it to just see what it does.
