Remington vs Savage
Hey whats up everyone, fairly new here so dont mind any dumb comments. In the next 3 months I will have a new 22-250 varminter, but which model I still cant decide on. Ive been looking at a Remington 700 vssf and a Savage 12bvss. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions, I know that Savage has an amazing new trigger system, but a Remington 700 (at least in my book) is a legend among legends, but still 300 more. Out of the box accuracy is my biggest requirement(with factory ammo, 6 more months before reloading)next to probable life of the gun with better than average upkeep. Looks dont matter, obviously, as I am considering a Savage

Im gonna buy a new .270 pretty soon. I have found two that look pretty good: the Savage model 111G and the Remington 700 Adl. Any feed back on these would be very helpful.Thanks

they will shoot about the same, but the remington is a better looking gun than the savage. savages are just plain ugly.

Savage has been known for its out of the box accuracy. Remingtons quality control has been crap lately. But if you are going to have the gun built into something custom, go with the 700Action. 0 -
I'm in the same boat, looking for a good .308 bolt action. I've kinda narrowed it down to Rem. and Sav. too. 0 -
Have you guys looked at the Ruger Model 77 ?? I just bought one in .257 Roberts and couldn't be happier. 0 -
Savage BARRELS are what yields their accuracy. They make a very straight and polished button rifled barrel. The barrel nut also aids in very tight headspacing ability (don't try this at home). Now, the rem700 platform is very simple, and super strong. These are my all around go-to action for any project. The bases, and triggers, stocks ect available for them far outnumber all other types of rifle.
Either will serve the purpose, but as far as looks and feel the rem700 has that locked down.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Which model .257 you got? I bought the ultalight many years ago. I finally found a load that really works well with it's short barrel. 42 gr. of Vihtavuori N140 behind a 100 grain Nosler BT. 3100 fps, chrono'd.
SAVAGE V. REM. - The Rem's were "always the most accurate,and strongest actions". I don't believe that, all one need to do is look at the fwd ring and see it's smaller than a small ring Mauser. and as for customizing for accuracy there is a guy down in IN called the gopher that really makes Savages shoot well. I shot a friends rifle, who sent his stuff there and we could pick hairs off a gophers chest @ 300 yds. if we wanted. The most accurate rifle I ever owned was a Win 70 HB in .222. The most accurate rifle I own now is a Savage. What do I hunt deer with? My Ruger .257 Roberts. It is the only major American rifle that will give you a nice walnut stock still for under 500 bucks. If having nice looking rifles that shoot is your thing that is the way to go. Accuracy is well within hunting requirements. -just a few thoughts/

Just a thought,but I really like my Browning A-Bolt in .270.
I especially like the 60 deg. bolt throw.[^]

the remington action thickness means little, it is the "3 rings of steel" that make the strength. The action is the outter ring, the chamber/shank threaded down far inside the action makes the second ring, and the boltface surrounding the casehead makes the third ring. When combined and measured, the chamber portion of the rem700 is one of thickest manufactured. Large ring mausers have a hollow space from the front of the action ring advancing inside towards the bolt. Yes the mauser barrel shank is the largest of all, but the hollow in the front of the action detracts from that. The rem700 shank is the next largest but has no hollow portion. That means little if anything at all for accuracy though, it only relates to "yield strength".[:0]
As stated, this means little for accuracy for an out of the box hunting rifle and need only be considered when looking at high pressure rounds or competition projects. Either will shoot well enough to hit deer out to 300yds, so choose based on the fit of each rifle to your shooting style, or whichever one you like the look of best.

Unless it has to be SUPER accurate , right of the box my recommendation for a "hunting rifle" would go to the Remington 700 BDL.They are strong, reliable and as easy to adapt (read customize) as any other off the shelf rifle I can think of. The Savage is just as accurate, maybe moreso, right out of the box, BUT, alot of people think they are UGLY! You might be able to "handle" a few Remingtons at the gun shop and find a trigger that feels good to you. The Savages have the accutriggers which are SWEET, once you get used to them. The 700 BDL will cost a little bit more. Either way, for the cost and peformance of an off the shelf rifle, I think the reasonable choice is between Remington and Savage! My $.02 0
