Aluminum or steel ?
Since some time ago I have seen how some manufacturers are increasing the use of aluminum based alloys for receivers, frames, guards........Is the choice of lighter alloys made for producing light guns or more versatile weapons the main reason or is just in order to decrease the costs and offer cheaper guns?
Some examples:
AR15: Aluminum receiver.
Sig P226 : Aluminum frame
Mossberg/ Maverick: Aluminum receiver.
Beretta M9: Aluminum frame.
Cheap european revolvers uses aluminum for frames (Arminius, Rohm...)
Cheap 22lr rifles uses magnesium receivers (Ruger, Remington,....)
I would like to hear some ideas or opinions about....Thank you.

Depends on the weapon in question. Aluminum is usually used to lighten a weapon because it is stronger than steel by weight but not cross-section. Magnesium and other alloys are usually used to construct weapons less expensively. Aluminum is usually forged as this method gives uniform grain structure and strength. Magnesium and other alloys will often be cast as it is reasonably strong yet cheap to do.
