    I am in the market for an original WWII carbine. Before I buy, I need to get an education. Can anyone recommend a book or two? Is there good info available on the net somewhere? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    My advice is: 1) Buy a copy of "US M1 Carbines Wartime Production" by Craig Riesch & "Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine" by Bruce N. Canfield. 2) Read the "M1 Carbine Forum" at www.jouster.com for a few months. 3) If you're in a hurry, go to www.scott-duff.com & you can buy any carbine he offers without worrying about whether or not you are being taken.

    Quality carbines start at $1K. The higher the price, the more likely that you are being offered a "hump" job when you shop the open market. Education is the only defense, & that will take a lot of time. Lots of folks will be willing to sell you "the best", "all original", "untouched", etc; few will actually deliver.

    For some odd reason the Winchester is highly prized among collectors, I sold one a year or 2 back and don't regret it. I currently have a Rock-Ola and except for 1 part it's all (restored to) original. I did not replace the stock and hand guard because it has original dents and dings which I think make it look better than an unfired and unused rifle. I do have to admit that I shoot the crap out of it and it eats everything I feed it unlike the newer ones. I also wanted a Rock-Ola to go along with my 1955 Rock-ola jukebox in perfect working order. You got good advice here so far but the best advice was to buy the Craig Riesch book from "nmyers" I reference this book so much it it etched into my memory.
