Revolvers and barrel length
Debating between getting a 7.5" and a 9.5". Either way, it would be a Ruger Super Redhawk. Opinions? Reasons? I'm just wondering if the extra two inches will make that much of a difference. Thanks all.

go shorter. muzzle heavy guns get old! shorter are easier to holster and swing around.

I agree...... 7 1/2" is long enough to get good velocity and accuracy out of.
Longer that that, and they are just too cumbersome for comfortable carry.

i'd go with the longer barrel for better accuracy and more velocity, unless you'll have a problem carrying the extra 2 inches, i have a 10 inch on my BFR 45-70 and like it alot, personally couldnt imagine having a 7.5 on it. If you are going to use the open sights the extra inches will give you a longer sight radius thus giving you improved accuracy. what caliber are you going to be shooting? 0 -

.44 magnum. Had the chance to get one today with a scope for $310 on GB but was debating on the longer barrel. Wish I had gotten it, though.

Is it for target, hunting or personal defence? Iron sights or scope? A scoped hunting or target handgun is already getting pretty bulky so you might as well go with the 9.5" barrel. If iron sighted I'd be looking to keep the bulk as low as practical so go with the 7.5" or shorter. 0 -
7.5 is perfect.

Eastwood, I was in the same boat as you about 8 years ago. I knew I was going to get a Super Redhawk, but which one? I opted for the 7.5" barrel. I have never regretted it. These guns are bad to the bone. I'd say you will not go wrong with either.[:D][:D]

My hand cannons are all single action, but that is just me. I like the longer bbl because it seems I can recover my sight picture faster with a 'muzzle heavy' pistol. And, I think the heavy loads deserve a decent length to develop velocity with the relatively 'slower burning' powders.
There have been several tests to look at the velocity changes with longer barrels in heavy calibers. One used a test bbl, and cut and re-crowned for each length in the test. I can't put my hand on it now, but I'm sure that the 44mag was in the test, and for barrels of 12 inches to 7.5 inches the velocity change was not major....around a 100 fps per inch of bbl shortened. After about 7 inches, the change per inch shortened got more significant. When I find the references I'll post them.
I find a length of 7.5 and 8.25 are a good compromise. I can't shoot any better with the 12 inch bbl revolver, but I keep it anyway.
