Of course the absolute best is Corbon; the loads are listed below (credit given to corbon web-site):
7.62x39 (self defense) 125gr JHP 2400fps/1600ftlbs 20 $18.85
7.62x39(hunting)150gr JSP 2300fps/1762ftlbs 20 $18.43
If you want something a bit more affordable I recommend Federal or
S & B ammo. You can not be a good hunter without pactice, with that said I recommend Wolf for blasting ammo.

Since many consider the 7.62X39 a bit marginal for deer; buy the best hunting load you can get or load your own.
Premium bullets in premimum ammo is still the least costly part of your hunt.0 -
Actually, I have some wolf ammo 7.62 X 39mm that is labeled "soft point" and "hunting". I have heard it will work but I have also been told not to take any shots farther than 50 yards away. 0 -
Other users are correct, the 7.62x39 soviet is NOT a .308 diameter. Although .308 bullets can be used, you will only get an acceptable rating if you were to reload. The actual diameter is .310 inch, and you should use .310 inch bullets. But be careful as the AK bullet may be listed under the .303 british which is actually .311 diameter.
Some people say the 7.62x39 soviet is equal in power to the 30-30. but I have found out that to really make it that effective you will need a 170gr bullet.
Just for reference:
.30 carbine diameter = .307 inch
.30cal (.30-30win and .308win) diameter = .308 inch
7.62x39 soviet diameter = .310 inch
.303 british diameter = .311

There is a fellow here on gunbroker, selling SILVER BEAR MATCH ammo
It is accurate ammo, and has a zinc casing, wont gum up like the WOLF.
Anyhow this stuff has a tit on top,and works like a hollowpoint..it is printed on the box "HOLLOW POINT EFFECT"
I bought over 600 rounds and this stuff is accurate..and Cheap0 -
I personally use the Wolf 154 gr. softpoint. It is effective on deer out to about 150 yds. I shot a skunk while groundhog hunting about a year ago and it blew a huge hole in it. It was a solid 175 yards and I held dead on.(no holdover) Wolf is no longer using the green cases with the lacquer. They now use a gray case that has a polymer coating that does not gum up the action. It is very accurate out of my bolt action and SKS. Cheap too.[8D][8D]

Unfortunately the "NOMINAL" .310 grove diameter for the SKS barrel, doesn't always hold true. I have a SKS that was made in the Russian Tula Arsenal in 1951. I know it's a early "51" production SKS, because the barrel isn't Chrome Plated. I was having accuracy problems that I couldn't figure out, until I slugged the barrel. It's .313+. Probably the barrel dimensions were made for Chrome Plating, BUT it never happened.
