Marlin vs. Winchester update

If you want to mount a scope the marlin 336 is far bettter because its side eject, where as the winchester 94 is top eject. I perfer the marlin any day. But it is really a preferece[:p]

    My 94 was a newer model with the "angle eject". I had no problems with mounting a scope on it. On the older (true top eject) models there might be problems but not on the newer ones.

    I've still never found a reason to mount a scope on a 94 or a 336, personally.

    It is preference, buy what you like. The marlin is beautiful. I had one in 357, but I just like the feel of a Scoped 44magnum winchester trapper with a 16inch barrel. That is compact power..The scope helps because in the moonlight when hunting hogs, you can see them just like it was daylight, through your scope. I also prefer the pistol cartridges, because they are shorter, and your capacity is greater.
    The 357 and 44 mag hold 9-11 cartridges, depending on your barrel length. I heard that Marlin is putting out a new 1894 in 50AE also a pistol cartridge.That one should be a hog buster, as well.
    Not to mention the 454 casull cartridge available in lever action, also a pistol cartridge. The 454 is preferred by many, because of its awsome power, and you can shoot 45 long colt out of the same rifle.
    357 rifle shoots 357 and 38special
    44 mag rifle shoots 44 mag, and 44 special
    454 rifle shoots 454casull and 45 colt.

    My 336 has a BSA 1.5-4.5 lighted reticle for those late evening shots. It helps. The magnification is not really needed but, the LR DOES help. Is that cheating? I can lose sight of the black in the shadows of the woods if it's getting late or just a very dark overcast day.

    You're never going to believe this!!

    Yesterday I went and put the order in for an 1894 Cowboy (.357) and about 5 hours later went to the "Friends of the NRA" dinner and won a Henry Big Boy in .44 mag.

    My son told my NOT to cancel the Marlin. I'm going to keep the Henry, but not modify it any way...too pretty. Hope it shoots/functions as well as my Marlins.

    I guess I'll have 2 rifles for "pistol" caliber Silhouette.

    i wonder if they'll ever chamber a lever for that new .460 from s&w.....that seems like it would be a hell of a hunting same caliber pistol/lever combo

    imay not know it all.....but at least I know that!

    Don't know but, it might be a cool project! You can get them ALOT of pistol calibers. Send Marlin and Winchester an email!

    Hey Vepr, way to go! Thats amazing just to roll up and win. Going back to your previous post on the other topic, you said your son is recoil sensative. How old is he? I can remember when I was young how worried I would be about the recoil and bang. I've never shot the .357 mag marlin but if you loaded .44 specials in the .44 model, he should be able to take that no problem. Just something to think about. I would have to agree with you about the reloading costs of the .357 as .44's can be pricey.

    Anybody comes through that door, you put two in the chest and one in the head!

    My son is 11. I told him because the Big Boy weighs almost as much as my 10lb .223, it would feel/sound the same. I think that once he tries it, he'll like it. I sent an email off to Oregon Trail/Laser Cast for some load data. If I keep the velocities down around 1200-1300 fps he won't feel a thing. The rifle is almost too pretty to shoot...almost.

    Still have to get the Marlin.

    For quite a while now the Winchester 94s are side eject and come drilled and tapped.[:)]
