1100 vs 1187 hey remington fans ???

lock stock and barrel
what is the difference between these two??? is a older 1100 better than a new 1187 priemer?????
to be just for trap / sporting clays????
can a barrel listed for 3" shoot 2 3/4????

    1100 doesnt have a stupid brass rod stuck in the forearm. looks like a mistake from the day it was made. 1100 has nicer wood.

    The original standard 1100 shotguns were designed to function properly using 2 3/4 inch shells ONLY. Due to consumer demand (esp.waterfowlers), Remington then came out with the 1100 magnum shotguns, which were designed for use with 3 inch shells ONLY.
    You couldn't fire 2 3/4 shells using the 3 inch magnum receiver, because the gas recoil action would not reliably eject a lighter load. Any 1100 shotgun you purchased was basically designed to fire one size shotshell ONLY.
    The 1187 series, whether 12ga or 20ga, will fire 2 3/4 shells and 3 inch shells interchangeably. This makes the 1187 series much more versatile, as you could use gun for trap and hunting (just buy some different length barrels), and the action will cycle properly over a wide range of loads.

    ....except for one thing, guns designed for a specific shell, work better than a 'do all gun.' a gun designed to shoot 3" mags will not be as reliable when 2 3/4's are stuck in it. and the same for the other way around.
    sometimes feeding consumer demands, ruins good gun design. its like shoes, you wear a certain shoe for a certain occasion. waterfowl? 3". skeet? 2 3/4". 2 guns in the cabinet. but because the new consumer has cheapened down, they want one gun that does it all. and thats why remington has cut corners and its why winchester is almost bankrupt. people dont want good guns for each occasion. they want ouboard sailboat canoes.[;)]
    1100's were great guns and still are.

    In my opinion, nothing beats the older 1100's with FIXED chokes as far as smooth handling and that "just right" feel. Those traits go a long way toward helping most of us becoming good and successful shooters.

    I have to take the 1100 over the 11-87 as well. Cousins got an 11-87 and its a good gun. I like the 1100 better cause I only need a 2 3/4 gun for pheasants. If you want to hunt Turkey or waterfoul you should probably get the 11-87 for the extra power, although I have not had problems with Turkey slaying with a 2 3/4 shell around here. 3 ionch shells dont give you a ton more range for the most part anyways, and if you are a quick shot you probably dont need them. he only magnum I own is an old A5 and I never use it. Most of my hunting is done with a Smith and Wesson 1000. Its my favorite, the 1100 is 3rd on my collection of favs.

    I also prefer the 1100 ,Its lighter and better looking
    wood and blueing,
    They also have a steel shot barrel
    that shoots 2 3/4 and 3 inch steel
    Best of both worlds

    Never had an 1100 but can tell you that my 1187 is designed for up to 3 1/2 inch shells and doesn't eject 2 3/4 inch shells worth a darn. I think the earlier post about guns designed for certain shells functioning better could be true here. I like mine (with 3-3 1/2)but thought it would "loosen up" a bit, I've fired quite a few boxes of shells through it and it still hasn't and I don't think it ever will kick the shorter hulls cleanly.

    My favorite skeet gun was an 1100 Synthetic with a fixed mod choke. Yes, I shot skeet with a modified, but almost never missed.

    As far as a 3" receiver ejecting 2 3/4" shells would it make a difference if hotter loads were used. For instance, a 7 1/2 shot rated at 1350 f.p.s. Just curious.

    Bobski once again is all over it, 11-87 is a good "do all gun", but the 1100 is definatley a better shotgun.
