The right method for cold blueing.

Please I get to know the right way for cold blueing a barrel. I get some parts pretty pale, others in a blue/black combination and some others with a straw like color. What should I do?

    thats one of the problems with cold blues. Many do not give you a uniform color. Plus it depends on what you are using for cold blue. When I first started out with bluing I tried them all. But they all come opff way too easy. Here is what I reccometn you do. First I reccomend using oxpho blue, it works best for me after going through the Birchwood Casey stuff, although the Perma Blue paste cream works pretty well for a cold blue. Also you must make sure that you have no oil on the parts. As with all metal finishing cleansliness is key. I would then apply your bluing chemical and let it do its work. The paste works well and if you are using Oxpho or liquid just keep running fresh pathces soaked in bluing over it until you get a deisred color. You can also blend with very very very fine steel wool to get a unifrom color. You must really work with it to get a good technique worked out. Experience is key. If you are going to keep your cold blue looking nice you have to seal it. What I did on an old junk sears pump was to cold blue it and then use Brake cleaner to spray it down to make sure its clean. I then coated it with a clear epoxy resin. You can buy it from Brownells for about 11 bucks a can. It will put a barrier between teh elements and the cold blue and make it last longer. If you want a dull finish just coat it lightly once, and more for more shine. It hold up well but ti takes a few days to cure properly. I have used it on some of my salt blued guns I have refinished to protect them from the elements when I go hunting. Hope this helps.

    One thing that will help, is to keep the parts to be blued in a warm state while applying the bluing solution. A hair dryer or heat gun works just fine...
    Apply the solution in long even passes for the best results, and keep the overlapping to a minimum.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    Another thing that's helped even up the color for me has been to apply the Oxpho Blue with fine steel wool...after thoroughly cleaning and warming the parts to be blued.
