Bolt Action .308 for Hunting

Any suggestions for a good but not too expensive SS .308 bolt action I can use for hunting mostly deer but maybe elk?

    Savage sells a nice model check them out its accurate right out of the box and it carries a very reasonable price tag.

    Savage is an excellent choice ( very accurate and inexpensive), so is Howa (also very accurate and a good deal), don't forget to look at Remington ADL synthetics ( cheaper than you think ), and Winchesters line of synthetics which are my personal preference just cuz I'm a Winchester fan and really like the 3 position safety.

    I agree Savage. I would look at the lever action model 99 in .308 and 300savage. My 2 cents [8D]

    Best bang for the buck is Savage. You may also for about the same money...and you shop around....find a good used M-70 or Rem 700. Sometimes too you can find a good custom Mauser. Customized rifles don't always bring a premium but most of them are well built. And if they were customized they are on an action that is worth having been customized. You do have to be careful and don't just jump on anything.

    there are some really good deals on remington ADLs. you can get one for under $400. savage is a good choice, but i prefer the remingtons. the ADLs and the Savages are around the same price.

    Tikka makes a very fine rifle at a good price. A free floating barrel and integrated bases, rings included, and the smoothest bolt on the market makes for some more attractive features.
    I was a die hard Browning/Winchester shooter for years. When it came time to replace a stolen model 70 featherweight I disliked the safety- it was very noisy. Important on a hunting rifle. Then after complaining about the price of a Browning the sales person offered me a Tikka. I have been nothing but impressed with the fit and finish, accuracy and reliability of the rifle.

    I would also go with the Tikka. Your definitely getting more than your money's worth. Like dcso3009 said, they have the "smoothest" bolt on the market. I have 2(.22-250 & .300 win mag) and my dad has 3(.25/06, .270, & .300) and all of them have shot excellent right out of the box. Besides the attractive features already mentioned, the tikka's also come standard with a detachable magazine. The two downfalls of the tikka's are that they are slightly heavier than most other manufacturers', but the new t3's do that some justice. Also parts are hard to come by at the moment because of their popularity. If not the tikka i would spend a little extra and go with Ruger, but i am a Ruger lover so thats just my opinion.

    I bought a Howa barreled action and put it on a Boyds JRS Classic laminate stock. Came in under $500 plus scope and rings.

    I personally agree with the savage 99, great gun. However all are good choices the next would probably be a remington ADL.[:D]

    I have a Winchester 88 in .308. It shoots very good, but I'm about half scared to shoot it too much. It came in the box when I bought it, and looks like it never left the box. With 140 gr. Barnes X bullets, and others, I can shoot 1.25" groups all day, and I don't shoot near as good as I did 20 years ago. Also, that new Remington 673 guide rifle is a real nice gun. Alot better than that 600 Mohawk, although I liked that one too. It would be hard to find a .308 that doesn't shoot real good, unless there was something wrong with it.

    Gotta agree with He Dog on this one. The Howa is said to be very accurate on the average and the boyds laminated stock is weather-proof and highly stable.

    For a workhorse (i.e. claw extractor, controlled feed) I will say that a Ruger M77 that is torqued properly in it's stock can be a very nice field/carry rifle.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
