TCR's
Can anybody tell me how much those tcr 83's and 87's cost when they were being made. On gunbroker, they are coming out of the woodwork. All I was looking for was a .243 barrel for mine about a month ago and they were hard to find and now they are everwhere at,in my opinion, a steep price tag. Also, does anybody have an opinion about the guns.

I sold a used 243 barrel on E B A Y a few weeks back that went for close to $400. That is a lot more that I would have been will to buy one for.

Market is cyclic and prices can run 2-3 times original selling (retail) prices. Especially true with the rarer chamberings.

The TCR 83's sold for $450.00, the TCR 87's sold for $500.00 in the standard model and the deluxe model with double set triggers and checkered stock was $550.00.
As far as the prices now for a used one? God only knows why anyone would want to spend hard earned money on one of these guns. T/C dropped them from the product line because they had so much trouble with them. I bought a TCR 87 from the T/C custom shop in late 1986 and the 30-06 barrel that was delivered with the gun would not lock up or fire. The trigger pull was 12 pounds on my scale and the safety took both hands to get it to move from side to side. I would guess over 30 pounds of pressure were required to get that crossbolt safety to move. All in all you could say I was very unhappy. To make matters worse, when I called T/C about it, they acted as if this gun was some sort of red-headed step child that they did'nt want around anymore. I keep this gun in the back of my safe simply to remind me never to buy a gun sight unseen ever again.
There may be a few of these that work great, but from the other TCR owners that I have met, my problems were the rule, not the exception. I guess if you want to buy one of these, you pay your money and take your chances.

I sent the gun back to T/C and they fitted the barrel to the action and it will lock up and fire, but the safty and trigger were the same after the factory service. To add insult to injury, after I recieved the rifle back, I shot it from a bench rest at 100 meters to try to zero it. Group size was nearly minute of barn door. I could not get groups under 3ft at that distance. I am far from a beginner and I have owned over 200 firearms in my lifetime, so I did the normal checks. Scope, mount screws, bedding, ammo, etc.
I called T/C again and asked if the gun could be returned for a refund, as I obviously was'nt going to be happy with it. The reply that I got was that it was a custom order through Fox Ridge Outfitters (T/C Custom Shop) and no refund was possible. I knew what the answer was going to be before I asked, because this is normal policy throughout the industry, but I would have expected them to make it right in any case.
After several weeks of frustration I finally just gave up on it. T/C is going to say they fixed it and I'm going to say they did'nt. I have 4 Contender's and several black powder guns from T/C in my collection and they are some of the nicest guns I own, but this model was the Edsel of the T/C line and I cannot reccomend it to anyone.
