Colt Colteer does serial # exist?
From the Sunshine State, west coast of Florida,
Hello folks! As I buy and sell guns i rarely come across a gun without a serial number, until the other day. I bought a Colt Colteer Stagecoach and a Mossberg 151M and I cannot find a serial number anywhere. I realize that some guns never had a serial number, I would just like your reassurance that either or both of the above mentioned .22s DO NOT have a serial number!!??

Colt's .22's manufactured during the period beginning in 1957 and running through the early to mid 60's were NOT serial numbered. Serial numbers were used by Most Manufacturers as a means of keeping track of the guns which represented considerable value but until 1968, the Government did NOT require a gun to be serial numbered. The Colt Stagecoach, along with the Colteer I-22 single shot, the Colteer Semi-Auto, etc. were not serial numbered because they sold in the $20 range and the cost of the labor to serial number the guns was something they didn't spend on. You will find many other manufacturers that didn't serial number their "Cheap" guns until the government required it. If the gun is a Cheaper model and is manufactured BEFORE 1968, (Mostly .22's), you will find very few with a serial number.....sometimes even if they do have a Model number or name...... These guns are legal and not a problem per the BATF. Others will probably add even more to this reply...........

The Colteer 4-22, Courier .22 Autoloader, and Stagecoach Autoloader started around 1964. Serial numbers were not applied until 1969 (according to my reference). First serial number in the series was SC01001. The series ended in 1976 with final s/n SC32929. (My reference for this is proofhouse.com/colt/index) The R.L. Wilson books, Colt Heritage and Colt, An American Legend also have serial number charts in back.
The Stagecoach model has been fetching a good price on GB when one occasionally pops up.0
