Loose rear sight on garand

I have a GI garand that the apeture part of the sight is loose, I have tried everything I know to tighten it up. I just wiggles in the elevation slot. Any ideas on fixing would be appreciated.

  The elevation knob (left side) should require some effort to turn; if it is loose, hold it with vise grips (pad with leather) & turn the screw with a well-fitting screwdriver to tighten.
  
  If that's not it, most likely you have worn gears on the aperture or the elevation pinion, or both, & disassembly is required. You are going to have to remove the nut on the right knob, & this may require a special tool, depending upon the type of rear sight. If the rifle has any value, at this point I'd take it to a service-trained armorer, rather than risk damage to the sights. Someone who specializes in service rifles will have the parts on hand to immediately replace all worn parts in your sight, & the cost should be reasonable.

  I had the same problem with a CMP M1 Garand. I replaced the rear sight cover and the problem was solved.

  The rear sight cover is actually a spring. Remove the rear sight cover and see if the indentation is worn, if so, replace the cover.
